Merging two non-overlapping shapes in Illustrator CC
Greetings,
as the titles says, I’m having issues with joining two shapes which do not overlap in Illustrator CC.
Explanation in the screenshots:
For example, I would like to merge the two objects selected, in the top-left https://prnt.sc/e0mdy2
The thing is, those two object do not overlap, as seen when I move the inside object out https://prnt.sc/e0mgk9
Anyways, the outside shape is not a stroke https://prnt.sc/e0mhab
Any help would be appreciated.

Select both objects and use Pathfinder > Unite.

Thanks for the swift answer but I’ve already tried that. and that’s what happens:

https://prnt.sc/e0x2plThe whole rectangle around the objects turns into the fill color. I have no idea why.
Please help.

Update – I think it has something to do with the clipping masks. Is there a way to convert them into objects?
btw, I’m pretty new with Illustrator, therefore I apologize for dumb questions. -
Hmmm. Could be.
A few other things to try first..
Object > Expand, then try Unite.
Or, as you suspect, Object > Clipping Mask > Release, then Unite.If you can’t get it to work, consider uploading the file and we’ll fix you up.
