After you’re logged in, when you reply to a thread, there are a set of small buttons above where you enter your text – B, I, U, etc. One of the buttons is a camera icon. You can hover your mouse over the icons for tooltips. This one says – Image Upload.
Click it and it opens your account’s Image Upload interface.
    Upload.
Then, when you click on your uploaded image, it gives you the image’s embed code. Copy/paste that code into your comment.

I’ve always used Photoshop and IconBuilder for Mac.

    Here’s a script on GitHub…

I haven’t tried it. It sounds like it might be version dependent, so you might need to modify it.

I realize you may have resolved this already, but I’m just seeing it now.

    11068_effectandenvelopetopobjectdistort.ai.zip

    The included steps are:
    1 – Start with a standard, straight, 2-point path.
    2 – Apply Effect > Distort > Zig Zag.
3 – Create a “Top Object” in the shape of a triangle, that is the desired shape of your taper. Again, a basic shape, 3-points, no curves.
4 – Make sure this top object is layered above the zig zag, then select both the zig zag and the top object and Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object.
Then add an additional path to the tip as needed.

February 23, 2017 at 1:00 am in reply to: Delete blue out of the black square

I’m not sure of your experience, so humor me.
Generally with Illustrator, your options are: delete/remove vector structures, clipping masks, or opacity masks.

I think you need a clipping mask. A compound clipping mask, to be precise.

If you’ve never made a clipping mask, do a test.
Draw a big circle, then draw a small square on top of the circle and position it so it overlaps the outer edge of the circle.
Then select both objects and Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
    This is a clipping mask.

Now, you probably need a compound clipping mask.
A compound path is an object with 2 or more paths, such as the letter ‘o’. There’s an outer path and an inner path.
In your case, make one box around all of the color, then make another box in the center, or whatever shape you need to knock out. Select both new objects and Object > Compound Path > Make.
Now, select your new compound path and the artwork and create a clipping mask, using the steps in the previous paragraph.

Let us know if you have any issues.

Here’s a revision. My goal was to just reduce the number of points. It’s a common approach to smoothing curves.

“If you just need to globally update colors,…”
This was incorrect. Although you can use the eyedropper on pasted items, to pull colors, it doesn’t appear to work on placed files.
I was assuming it would work. I just tested it and it doesn’t work, as you indicated.

    I just don’t see a clean solution.

Regarding useful and necessary features, I’d say that that old heavyweight applications like Illustrator are built to service so many different needs in so many industries, and it’s been built up over the years to be what it needs to be. That said, plenty of people already think that apps like AI or PS are severely over bloated as it is.
Illustrator started as Adobe’s in-house font authoring tool.

What you are talking about would be a fantastic feature. I’m sure I’ve had similar thoughts, as I also do quite a bit of front end work.
I’d see it having to be some sort of plugin, possibly a script.
Maybe it could use some layer naming approach. All paragraphs go it the paragraphs layer. All H1s go it the H1 layer, etc.

I have a mixed opinion on CC. Currently only using it at work. Home is still CS.
I feel like it’s the best solution for Adobe to reduce piracy, earn profit. But I don’t really like the remote aspect at all, though it has a degree of convenience.

Sounds like you’d need to maintain an Illustrator template file, though this wouldn’t work like a linked file, as you need. The template is essentially just a regular AI file, except it loads from the templates folder. So, previously created files wouldn’t update.

If you just need to globally update colors, you could File > Place a TIF, AI, EPS, or whatever, but I don’t know of a good way to handle type styles.
That might be more suited to a InDesign project.

From a programmatic sense, you’d have to be able to essentially create classed text objects – A H1 text object, and a blockquote text object, etc.
This seems like it would be out of scope for Illustrator.

What I do in a similar situation is, as I’m sure you’ve considered, is to just maintain a master file ‘Swatches and Patterns.ai’, then copy and paste. For you, it might be ‘Swatches and Text.ai’.
If it’s something that can be created as an effect, I’ll save it as a Graphic Style.

Even if you had a centralized style file, each of the attached AI files would also need to be resaved for the update to occur. However, that might only be an issue if you’re including PDF previews in the file. Not sure. Just thinking out loud.

    Just some initial thoughts.

Also, once an item or items is selected, in the Layers palette, a selected item indicator appears on the right side of the layer. It’s a small colored square. You can click and drag this indicator to the desired layer. This will move all items that are currently selected.
