I’ve tried pluggin in the mac power adapter upside down and that doesn’t work either. and it’s not just related to the external drive cause when it’s not plugged in, i still have this problem. My only success comes when I’m wearing shorts, or working in my undies. I put the laptop on my legs and my bare legs help to ground the current. I guess my legs don’t feel the shock as much as my wrists do. I’ve got to find a soluction. I’ll be here for two months and can’t work like this. I’m no wuss, but it is uncomfortable.

Put your project files and capture scratch on your external. You’ll need to have all your render files on your external drive as well. Then, when you go back to your G5, just open the project file that’s stored on the external.
In other words, don’t store anything on the computers. Use external drives.

Lyric Image Conrol has a plug in called Shadow-Highlight. It’s sort of slow on the renders, but it helps brighten up areas of shadow without blowing out the lighter areas.

FCP 4.5 won’t run on the mac book pro. I found out the hard way. It requires AGP graphics. The macbook pro uses PCI. You’ll have to upgrade to 5.1.1.

About using track mattes: Is there a way one sold can be used as a track matte for several layers?
I have 3 objects that I move from “behind” a spot in my video. So I can create a square that will be used as a track matte. But I have objects that I want to come from “behind” this spot. I had to duplicate the matte layer 2 times and then have 3 objects and 3 track mattes.

I’ve got a crazy idea:
Use frame interpolation and a time stretch factor of 200%. Export that comp as still image sequences. Now you have twice as many frames as before, granted some of the frames AE created.
Then, bring those in back into AE and “build” your footage, one frame at a time.
That’s sort of the general idea without the specifics.

Not an expert, but here’s what I”VE done and it works. I create 2 identical layers of the footage. I drag the playhead until I get to the frame I want to freeze. On the top layer, I create a freeze frame. I drag the length of this frame the length I want. On the bottom layer, I split the layer (cmd shift d). On middle layer, which was just created, I drag that to the right until the in point of this layer corresponds to the out point of the freeze frame layer. Boom, you are done. There’s probably a way to do it with keyframes on one layer, but haven’t messed with it yet.

oh, i misunderstood. What I did was take the rendered file and put it into iDVD. I didn’t further encode it. I tried a Animation codec rendered file AND a DVDPRO 50 rendered file directly out of AE. I didn’t run it through compressor or anything.
