If you want specifics, here you go.
COMP SETTINGS: NTSC DV. Width 720. Height 480. Pixel Aspect Ratio D1/DV NTSC (0.9). Frame Rate 29.97. Resolution Full.
The footage was brought in normally as DV NTSC footage in FCP and exported as a self contained FCP quicktime. Nothing different. In AE, it says it’s 720×480 (0.9) Separating (Lower), 29.97 fps, DV/DVCPRO NTSC.
I’m not sure what the Interpret Footage thing is supposed to do. I’m not changing from one frame rate to another.
I already told you my render settings in AE: Quality: Best.Frame Blending: On for Checked Layers. Field Render: Off. Pulldown: Off. Motion Blue: On for checked Layers. Frame Rate: 29.97 (comp). Output Module: Quicktime Movie, DVCPRO50-NTSC.

Create a mask in the first frame. You can then keyframe the mask in every frame and make adjustments to your mask. Yes, it’s tedious.

apply the Broadcast Safe filter (in color correction tab). You can select all the clips and drag the filter over them. Easy. This will clip all your whites and your blacks to fall into legal range.

Yeah, that’s not my problem. I typically find the in/out points, put the clip into a blank area of my timeline, then CMD J to change the speed. Then I put the clip in the correct spot. I’ve had this project for over a year. My workflow is fine and have no problems. It’s just that today I opened the project and played back a section that I haven’t worked on for a couple of weeks. I noticed that it looks like someone went in and messed the the time remapping of about 20 clips. A clip that used to be slow mo, is not in reverse really fast. Or it’s in reverse, then freezes, then goes forward slow. Or it’s just a time remap with speed set to 0%.

FCP 4.5. My clips are between 2 and 4 minutes. The project has over 500 clips in it.

You need to do a search on what interlacing is. Regular TV’s show interlaced images. Computer screen show progressive images. So ultimately, if you show something on a regular tv, then it’s interlaced.
To export your video, don’t do EXPORT QUICKTIME CONVERION. Just export QUICKTIME MOVIE. Once it’s exported, open iDVD and then drag your movie into iDVD.
The bottom line is you shouldn’t have to be worrying about interlacing or not. Just shoot the video. Edit it. And export to a DVD.

If you are exporting out for web use, then you’ll want some sort of compression. Use H.264 or something else.
Export Quicktime Conversion
at the bottom, click OPTIONS.
click SETTINGS.
pick a compression setting
OK
click SIZE
select DEINTERLACE VIDEO SOURCE.
then OK.See if that works for you.

I didn’t know that FCP doesn’t officially support firewire. Huh. Well, I tried to plug in the LaCie with the FW400. Now to turn the camera on to see if it works…Nope. Same deal. So, as far as I’m concerned, my Maxtor One Touch FW400 drives are better than the LaCie because I can have 4 of them on and connected at teh same time, and still run the camera and capture footage.
I’m taking it back tomorrow am.

I tried different cables, no effect. actually, I am able to get both drives on my desktop and transfer files between them. But I was able to do that before. The problem was when I turned on the camera deck.
I tried formatting the drive. Again no difference. So I guess having a FW800 hard drive and trying to run a camera deck is useless.
Customer service from LaCie returned this:
All FireWire devices on the computer share the same bandwidth. Some devices (especially cameras) take up a large chunk of that bandwidth even when they are not in use.
When troubleshooting, please first make sure to remove all other external FireWire devices. Then connect this drive only and confirm that it works correctly. Then add one of the other devices (one at a time) and check if the drive and the other device still work together.
You may also consider daisy-chaining one or more devices together on one port.So no help, really.
Oh, I will try one more thing. I will plug in the LaCie with the FW400, like the other drives and the camera. But I have to shut down my computer. Bye.
