I’m shooting greenscreen with a Panasonic DVX100a. I can capture footage 2 ways. Record to tape. Or, capture directly to FCP. Does capturing directly to FCP give me a better quality? Can I capture it as DVCPRO50 or firewire. I’ve got no dedicated capture hardware like blackmagic or aja. All I have is firewire.

If all you are using is firewire it make zero difference what you do.

If you had some kind of capture card and could go analog out of the camera and capture that as some other format then yes, it would make a difference.

But going firewire is the same as recording to DV tape first.

Absolutly right. Not differece at all from the tape or FireWire.
I’ve got just a SONY DVCam DSR-PD 170 but when I capture to chroma-key with the Blackmagic in 8/10b Unc, I can not belive that image come from my own camara.

You don’t get tape drop outs when you capture directly. For keying, anything gone through DV compression pretty much sucks.

Although, if you capture from tape, you have timecode accurate time code on your clips in case you need to capture again for some reason. In any case, capture to your tape at the same time in order to have an aechive copy for later.
