What codec is the footage? I’m guessing something like h.264 or another compressed codec. If so, transcode to prores or other edit friendly codec before attempting to edit.

Try Googling “too much too soon flashframe plugin”. It’s free, works great (for what your tryin to do, you’ll wanna make it 10 frames or less), an I use it quite a bit

I just had this happen to me on an edit! Since it still played, I just finished the edit and all was fine. However, it was only the thumbnails in the timeline that showed offline and not on the bin. I suspect it’s the thumbnails that became corrupt. I didn’t try this, but you might be able to delete the thumbnail cache, while FCP is closed, then when you re-open FCP, it’ll re-populate the thumbs. Lemme know if it worked!

Check out: https://www.finalcutprotemplates.com These guys have some of the best and easiest to use master templates (that work in FCP and Motion!) and they packs are priced very well. I own and use all of them often!

May 7, 2010 at 12:31 pm in reply to: FCP Won’t Capture HDV?

I believe FCP 5 only captures HDV as Apple Intermediate codec. FCP 6 & 7 will do straight HDV, but you don’t want HDV anyway. 6 & 7 allow you to capture as Apple Prores and that’s what you want. Don’t worry about HQ…regular Prores is perfect. Do a search on the workflow. You really need to upgrade. If and when you do, wipe your drive and start from scratch with a full fresh install.

    Hope that helps!

From time to time I have issues with the same box and fcp. For me, it’s been as simple as ADVC needing to be restarted. Just unplug it (I have mine powered by the FireWire so unplug that) let it sit for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

Then you can switch back and forth again and all is right with the world. Well, has been for me so far.
