I’ve just been given a Mac Pro tower to edit on loaded with FCP 605. I’ve plugged my firewire drive in to it and it all looked ok to start with … but it won’t draw waveforms in the timeline, which is infuriating! Is there a cache file or something that I need to set?

I was working on a MacBook Pro with FCP 606. That drew the waveforms fine.

What should I check to get the tower to draw the waveforms?

check your sequence settings – its an option in the timeline tab.

Try: option>command>w with the timeline selected to enable them

Even when I match framed clips to the viewer on the tower, it wouldn’t draw the waveforms.

I’m back on to my MacBook Pro, as the tower had a big crash and I don’t trust it!

Must be something to do with not seeing the Waveform Cache Files folder, coz when I recorded VO on the tower the waveform appeared, but now when I open the sequence on the MacBook, all the original waveforms appear, but NOT the ones for the VO I recorded on the tower.

    Strange.

delete waveform cache files. reset where they go in system settings. should force a redraw if not the usual trash prefs etc

Try deleting your audio render files and turning off Auto Render in the user settings. I see this issue from time to time when working between two systems and one of systems has auto render turned on.
