I will tell you that I have the same setup as far as 10.5.8 and fcp 6 and never update until I have to because of issues or whatever. I recently had capture issues with DV (I always work in different flavors of HD but had a SD client) so I bit the bullet.

Everything worked fine until I had to export an mpeg-2 for station delivery. About a week after the update. Well, I couldn’t get them to pay back when done! Turns out they were fine but that update had broken the mpeg-2 playback component, or as the apple tech explained QuickTime 7.6.6 wasn’t compatible with the version from FCS2. After a long discussion about why that’s BS as this is something that comes with my expensive PRO app, they appologized but told me that I would have to purchase the new MPEG-2 playback component if I wished to have that function. I gave in, bought it, and all is well.

Just wanted you to know about that possibility. I always wait to update till I HAVE to because of odd behaviour or something like that.

John…just trust what they tell you here. Especially on a question that gets asked about every day. H.264 is nit an edit format. Of you don’t have the Canon EOS plugin for log an transfer, then just grab the files from the camera…batch encode them to prores in compressor, then take those into FCP. You’ll be good to go! The footage from these cams is awesome (if done right) but if must be transcoded to be edited in FCP.

After Effects. Motion (part of Final Cut Studio) if you don’t have After Effects but you won’t be able to do as much with it.

Check out Magic Bullet Frames plugin! That’s exactly what it was made for. They have a free demo as well.

Quick question about RAM preview…I’m new to AE and working on a Mac Pro with the Bluetooth keyboard. Problem is that the Apple Bluetooth keyboard doesn’t have a numeric keypad. So…I can’t use the 0 key for RAM previews. Can’t I use the other 0?

I’m on my iPhone right now so I’m nit gonna go search the site for it but Digitaljuice.com has a great tutorial on how to do this with basic AE. Go and search DJTV on there for it. The thumbnail has a dude playing baseball. Of course they are trying to sell their products (footage in this case) but the lessons are top notch and very informative. Oh…and FREE!
