Edit Canon D7 Footage in FCP
Posted by John Higgs on April 20, 2010 at 4:49 pmHi Guys,
Can any one tell me what settings i select for editing Canon D7 files in FCP 7?.
I import the files into FCP and they play in the viewer, but when i put them on the timeline they will not play off the timeline,

April 20, 2010 at 4:55 pmUse Log and Transfer – with the Canon EOS plugin which is downloadable from Canon’s site.
The source footage from the 7D (and all other DSLR’s) is compressed and isn’t “edit friendly”

April 20, 2010 at 6:29 pmMany thanks Jason, i forgot to state that i have a Blackmagic HD Extreme card installed in my Mac Pro,
and it’s the play back of the files on the timeline that is the problem, so would i need to look at the settings in Black Magic?.

What you have to do is to transcode the footage to Prores.
As jason pointed, the h264 is not an editing codec.

April 21, 2010 at 10:30 amJohn…just trust what they tell you here. Especially on a question that gets asked about every day. H.264 is nit an edit format. Of you don’t have the Canon EOS plugin for log an transfer, then just grab the files from the camera…batch encode them to prores in compressor, then take those into FCP. You’ll be good to go! The footage from these cams is awesome (if done right) but if must be transcoded to be edited in FCP.

In about as many ways as you can possibly conceive!
Most of the time…the problem is disguised in a “problem with final cut” question…
– My video won’t play back to my monitor smoothly
-I have a red line needing to render even though settings match footage-Jaosn

November 1, 2010 at 3:38 pmI converted using Apple Pro Res 422 HQ. Now there are all kinds of irregular problems on the timeline when I edit. What is the appropriate sequence setting? Should compressor be none or apple pro res 422 HQ. And if I export a file that I want to reuse in a sequence what should export settings be now? compressor none?
Thanx
Perry
