There is probaly a better way than I will describe, but this is what I do in your situation:

I usually move the nested sequence up to an un-used track and lock the other tracks before “stepping-in” to the nest to lengthen the clips within it. Another alternative would be to move the nest to the end of your sequence before trimming it so that it won’t affect any of your other edits.

It would be great if FCP was intuitive enough to allow you to trim beyond where your clips end within the nest if there is enough media there, but I deal basically the same thing when using Avid’s “collapse” feature and trying to trim beyond my intitial edit.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone else knows how to do this without a workaround.

May 6, 2005 at 8:26 pm in reply to: dupe frame detector?

This will only work if the actual same frame (same TC) from the same tape are in the same sequence. In other words, if your footage is actually the same frame (same image) but was digitized from a different tape, or even a different TC from the same tape FCP will not recognize it as duplicate (based on the image itself). Don’t know if this is what is happening with you or not…
Other than that, when I have dupe detection turned on I get that color bar above the clip.

  • Yeah, I’m going to try that one out too. Thanks, Steven.

  • Pressing “b” will switch your tool to the blade. “a” takes you back to the arrow. That’s what I use.

  • Yeah, I think there is a limit on the length of clip names when it comes to EDL’s. You could always plan around that in the future. Let me know how this works out for you… I could have to do it again sometime!

May 5, 2005 at 10:11 pm in reply to: What’s HDV like for everyone?

Check out the new camera from Panasonic coming out this fall. I believe it is the HVX200 or something. It shoots DVCProHD, which it seems is quite preferable to HDV from what I can see. And it is around $6000. It also has some of the “Vari-Cam” features like shooting 60fps to get smooth slow-mo and all the cine-gamma settings that the DVX100 has.

I was excited with the HDV at first until I heard you could get closer to the “real thing” for around the same money with DVCPro HD. Now, it is still a compressed format but I’ve worked with downconverted footage from a DVCProHD camera, and it was pretty nice.

On the other hand, Apple was demo-ing some FCP setups running HDV at NAB, and they looked great also. But they weren’t really showing shots with alot of motion, so I don’t really know the answer to your question regarding that.

    Hope this helps.

May 5, 2005 at 10:02 pm in reply to: How to find dupe negative in Final Cut??

I’m on an Avid today, but I believe there is “Automatic Dupe Detection” setting in your sequence settings. You can right-click (CTRL-click) your sequence to get to it’s settings. There may also be that option in the pop-up menu in the lower left corner of your timeline (looks like a little arrow I think).
    Hope this helps.

  • Yeah, I’m trying to remember what I did. More recently we went the opposite direction (Avid to FCP), and that worked out fine. I’m on a Symphony today but I got a buddy (who is on FCP today) to shoot me a simple EDL. I tried to bring that in, but I see what you are saying about tape names, etc… Also the durations of the clips were 23:59:29 or something like that. I have a feeling that the clip and tape settings are getting somehow messed up. If you are familiar with what an EDL coming out of the Avid should look like you might be able to quickly edit your EDL (text file) and change back what is being swapped.
Also, my friend just sent the EDL with the default settings from FCP. If I had more time I’d try a few different settings… maybe one of them would work properly.
Post back if you figure something out, and I’ll do the same.
    Good luck!

May 5, 2005 at 8:51 pm in reply to: Sell my DVX?

We are an SD only facility. That being said we use HD *All The Time* as a “film substitute”. We have HD footage downconverted to SD, and the difference between that and DV is unbelievable (though still not really as good as film).

For me, this camera is a no-brainer. 3 chip DVCProHD that I can acquire through FireWire, downconvert to SD 10-bit uncompressed (which looks great) from within Final Cut Pro, edit and output to DigiBeta. What’s not to like?

Anyone interested in a XL1-S (with bag)? =)

  • Your best bet is automatic duck.

    https://www.automaticduck.com/

I’ve done this before using an EDL, but it was a very simple, cuts-only, one video track sequence. If you have a more complicated sequence, or you’ve done much to your video with FCP’s built in tools (i.e. resizing, drop shadows, CC, etc…) you stand a much better chance of getting your sequence into Avid using Automatic Duck.

    Hope this helps.
