  • Is there a keyboard shortcut for blading within the timeline?

Posted by Tim Snider on May 6, 2005 at 2:19 pm

I have looked in the manual but can’t seem to find a way to do this. I can’t stand having to grab for the mouse to make a blade cut in a clip in the timeline.

    Thanks!

Control-v will place an add edit (cut point) in the auto selected clip.

Check here for more info on auto select:

Pressing “b” will switch your tool to the blade. “a” takes you back to the arrow. That’s what I use.

Thanks, Todd. But the CTRL-V allows me to actually apply the cut at the play head. And that’s what I needed.

    Thanks again,
    Tim

I can’t take much credit, as I posted the same thing several years ago, and Lisa Brenneis (author of the Visual QuickPro Guides for FCP) told me this trick.

I feel I’m obligated to pass along all the generous help I’ve been given.

Another mantra she signed in my copy of her book for FCP 1.0 “Don’t Forget to Save often!”

Another hint is while the clip is playing and you want to time out some cut points you can hit control -v (while the clip is still playing) and it will insert markers wherever you hit control-v. When you hit the space bar to stop, the clip will then divide wherever the markers were set.
