  • Sell my DVX?

Well, these posts are bound to come up.

I have a DVX100A, and am weighing my options with regard to keeping the cam, or cashing out and getting the new panny cam later in the year.

My assumptions are that the new cam is every bit as capable as the DVX100A in its standard DV capabilities (the 24p modes, gamma, knee etc) and can record to tape. Also assuming that it is native 16:9, and therefore no need for a squeeze mode or anamorphic adaptor.

I have the camera (which only has 18 hours on it), the panasonic anamorphic adaptor, a century 1.6x teleconverter, a kata case, some batteries.

I’d be interested in feedback with regard to my assumptions of the capabilities of the new cam as it stacks up against the DVX100 (i.e my assumptions above and any I might have missed) and what a good fair market value might be for the cam, case and the two lenses, if I were to sell it all today?

    Feedback most appreciated!

    Jim

Jim, you fail to mention which new Panny you are talking about, as Panasonic has more than one new offering.
Let’s assume that you are talking about the AG-HVX200.

As a business owner, before I purchase new equipment, I’ll make an assessment of needs to see if the purchase is justified.
If I were in your shoes, I would ask myself the following…

“My assumptions are that the new cam is every bit as capable as the DVX100A in its standard DV capabilities”
Are you going to be using the new camera in DV mode, Which your current camera already does?

“Also assuming that it is native 16:9, and therefore no need for a squeeze mode or anamorphic adaptor”
Is this not a feature you already have with your current camera and accessories?

Am I buying this new camera for High Def use?
And if so, will I also need to purchase an HD VTR, an HD monitor, update software?
How will perspective clients view the HD material, as at this point their are no HD DVDs?
Are my clients even asking for HD?

I will assume that since your current camera only has 18 hours of use on it,
either it is only a week old, or you don’t really shoot all that much.

I would have to ask myself, If I were buying this camera for future HD use,
would it not make sense to wait until the format is better established, with more offerings,
dropping the prices down further, with even better quality cameras and playback systems?

Or you might just want one!
So I say sell your camera, and go buy the new one!

David is right on this one… the HD format seems far from firmly established. At the moment, the price of gas seems more relevant than the cost of upgrading to HD media, at least among most of the households in my circle of friends, so it would seem to follow that the general market for HD is still relatively narrow, particularly at the prosumer level.

We are an SD only facility. That being said we use HD *All The Time* as a “film substitute”. We have HD footage downconverted to SD, and the difference between that and DV is unbelievable (though still not really as good as film).

For me, this camera is a no-brainer. 3 chip DVCProHD that I can acquire through FireWire, downconvert to SD 10-bit uncompressed (which looks great) from within Final Cut Pro, edit and output to DigiBeta. What’s not to like?

Anyone interested in a XL1-S (with bag)? =)

Just to point out that the camera can only capture HD to the P2 cards. And from what I here they are $1700 for an 8gb one. That means 16 min of footage on one card.

Doesnt seem like quite a bargain to me yet.

Now if the lottery happens to come up my numbers, then panasonic….we got a deal.
