I’m staying on 10.3.8 and FCP 4.5 for now because it is basically rock-solid. Too many components are still at .0 or .1 phase (OSX, FCP, QuickTime) for me to be comfortable. I did install Tiger on my laptop and as far as I can tell FCP 4.5 was working on it fine, but I of course only used DV on the laptop.
    I’d wait a minute….

  • Well, I did it. I wiped my drive and started over. I didn’t really back everything up, but I was able to hold on to the applications I needed and most of my personal files I didn’t want to use.
My hard drive was so full of applications that I never used, some I had tried to uninstall but some of the components were stuck in my system folder, that I was kindof glad to just wipe it and start over. Like I said, this is just my personal laptop so I’m at least not forced to earn my living off it (like I was when I first bought it).
    Thanks for all your advice!

Heh, even if it did network render that doesn’t really have to do with performance… That’s why I asked what his performance issues were. I don’t know about you guys, but network rendering isn’t something that I would even really use in my workflow. FCP is rendering what I give it so fast these days I can barely get in the occasional cigarette!

No. What kind of performance issues are you having?

I personally hate it. It is even worse than Avid’s 20:1 IMO. But what choice do you really have outside of stocking up on external firewire drives or something. You should really be able to use it though for a simple cuts rough edit. I wouldn’t do much FX with it in that state of course.
Give it a try with some test footage and see if it will work out for you.
Also read up on how to “up-rez” your footage when you are ready to online. If you haven’t done it before, you should read up on the process (just search posts in this forum).
    Good luck!

  • You can do that by using “Media Manager” withing FCP (under “Tools” menu I believe). The manual has fairly detailed directions on how to do this and so does Ken Stone’s site:

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_homepage_index.html

Be careful when you do this as there is room for human error and you could screw yourself. It doesn’t help that FCP gives you these warning messages that freak you out a bit before you do just about anything with Media Manager (freaks me out anyways). But it does show you how much space your media is currently taking up and how much it will take up after you “remove unused clips” (I think that is what FCP calls this- I’m sitting at a Symphony today…)

    Hope this helps.

May 10, 2005 at 3:38 pm in reply to: Color Correction

Under Effects>Video you should find a broadcast safe filter. This should get you by, but look at your scopes in FCP (or external) and make sure that your waveform levels are between 0 and 100 and your vectorscope shows the colors basically within the circle. That is a VERY basic description of these things… You’ll want to do more research or talk to a broadcast engineer sometime.
    Hope this helps.

Check your clip settings tab and make sure you don’t have “Audio Only” checked. It can sometimes toggle to that on it’s own I’ve found.

[Jake Abramson] “I have the ability to export the background as a separate part and a luma channel for the foreground text.”

Uh, I think you are talking about “alpha” channels… Sounds like you just need to render out your background lower third with alpha then bring it into FCP, add text, done. Not sure what you meant by the luma channel for foreground text… Couldn’t you use the title tool? Or Photoshop for that matter?

When you export your QT file, check the box that says “Make Movie Self-contained”. You were exporting QT reference movies and something is getting messed up in your workflow.
