  • Easy way to find if a clip is used in a sequence?

Posted by Mick Bowman on May 10, 2005 at 3:29 pm

I’m using FCP3 and my sequence is 90 minutes long.
I want to delete any unused clips from my hard drive
(whatever was not cut into the sequence) but after
months of editing I’m not really sure what I did and
    didn’t use.

Avid has a “select unreferenced clips” option that lets
you quickly see what hasn’t been used in your sequence.
Is there any similar feature in Final Cut?
    Thanks!

No such feature that I know of.

    You can start here, though:

You can do that by using “Media Manager” withing FCP (under “Tools” menu I believe). The manual has fairly detailed directions on how to do this and so does Ken Stone’s site:

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_homepage_index.html

Be careful when you do this as there is room for human error and you could screw yourself. It doesn’t help that FCP gives you these warning messages that freak you out a bit before you do just about anything with Media Manager (freaks me out anyways). But it does show you how much space your media is currently taking up and how much it will take up after you “remove unused clips” (I think that is what FCP calls this- I’m sitting at a Symphony today…)

    Hope this helps.

“You can do that by using “Media Manager” withing FCP”

You can also do a search in the browser for either used or unused media in a particular sequence or in the project as a whole.

Select the Sequence in the Browser and then select Find from the Edit menu. A window opens where you can search for all unused clips (among many other things).
