    I am looking at producing a 30 second commercial to be playd on local cable. I called the cable company’s production people (time warner) to see if I could get a standards sheet for color correcting, but the guy acted like he had no idea what I wanted. This will be my first product to go on T.v., so I don’t know the specifics on broadcast quality color correcting. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    Under Effects>Video you should find a broadcast safe filter. This should get you by, but look at your scopes in FCP (or external) and make sure that your waveform levels are between 0 and 100 and your vectorscope shows the colors basically within the circle. That is a VERY basic description of these things… You’ll want to do more research or talk to a broadcast engineer sometime.

    there’s a pretty good description of video levels and what the scopes show you in the FCP Help menu. Just type in Vectorscope and Waveform in the Search area.

    Yeah. but to merely slap on a broadcast safe filter is not really the proper method to color correct. It’s only a safety valve, IMO. Once you know how to use the waveform monitor and vectorscope, you would use the color corrector 3 way to achieve proper luma, chroma and sat. Once that is done, the sequence is nested and the broadcast safe filter is applied to the entire sequence. This is explained in my book, as well as other resources that are available.

    Well, it’s entirely possible that the person you spoke to really didn’t know what you wanted. I’m guessing that you spoke to a salesperson, but you really wanted to speak with an engineer.

    The above advice pretty much covers it, especially Kevin’s. You’ll also need to use a broadcast monitor that can be calibrated to color bars, & a good eye.

    Also ion terms of technical requirements it entirel depends on the broadcast/cable company’s own specs. Just to be helpful most TV companys specs differ and some are more ruthless than others. Someone at the company will have a tech spec sheet. I would just persevere with the switchboard!!
