Yeah, I forgot about that. Which is funny because I use it all the time. So I guess if they have the same font that you are using they should be able to create the graphic themselves. I see where you are coming from, but if there is any “design” to the graphic it would be better done by a designer.
(I see local spots all the time that scream “Editor trying to do design”, and I’ve come to really respect what a good graphic designer brings to any project.)

You can’t really add a soft drop shadow or any kind of glow in Avid’s basic Title Tool without running through hoops or using a 3d party plug in to acheive it. So I can understand it, especially if they are trying to match another graphic that you might have created in the same piece. This is something that is a regular part of our workflow here, but I did ask for a copy of Photoshop on my edit box so that I could quickly revise or create a graphic. PS is actually an essential part of my workflow on a day to day basis, and I’ve found that most editors have at least a basic working knowlege of it.

I’m used to Symphony, but it is my understanding that you are probably working in DV on Avid Xpress Pro, unless you have Mojo, which I believe will give you 1 channel uncompressed. If you don’t have Mojo, then yes Avid is compressing your “footage”/image sequence when it is captured/imported to the settings that your project is set up for. As you capture Avid writes it’s own file, making it’s own copy of your media in a file that it understands (native).

Actually I think Mojo would be your [crackcode] “mf* massive video card”
    but I don’t believe it is $3-8K.

[crackcode] “s this workflow acceptable in proffesional industry such as broadcast & commercial production?”

It depends. A lot of “Ma & Pa” shops out there are still working in DV only, and they seem to be making money at it. It is “professional” in the sense that it meets broadcast spec, but the difference betweeen DV and uncompressed is very noticable, so I would say it is up to what you want your product to look like.

Yeah it is kindof a weird workflow.

Use makeRGB first, then add whatever effect (i.e. glow, etc.), then you would normally add S_Layer to see back through your alpha. It so happens though that with Drop Shadow it “layers” it for you automatically.

So in your case you would use S_MakeRGB then S_Drop Shadow. That should work… it’s still the only way I can add a soft drop to a graphic created elsewhere.

  • Heh, I see you’ve posted this in both forums too. You’ll probably get very different stories in both. My answer is it depends on what you are doing. Both apps are very good at what they do. You can create the same product (basically) with either system. Good work comes from talented people, no matter what they cut on. What you should do is go and see a demo of each, then put your hands on each one. So much is relative man…

If you want to see people arguing about it (including me), just do a search of “FCP vs. Avid” in this forum and/or FCP’s forum. You’ll find all the points I or anyone else would probably make by searching.

    Good luck!

  • Hey Mel,

Between Twixtor and ReTimer, which do you prefer? We’ve downloaded a demo of each for our FCP box but alas I’m stuck down here on the Avid for the next few days and I can’t try them out. Any major pros/cons you’ve seen between the 2?

  • I’d go with the external drive thing. Were you talking about trying to edit through your ethernet connection? I don’t think you can do that, even with DV. I’m assuming you are a DV user right?

April 25, 2005 at 10:36 pm in reply to: Exporting a QT mov with audio

If you have “use selected tracks” or whatever it is called, that could be hosing you. I usually mark in and out at the head and tail of the whole sequence and have all tracks selected. Maybe that’s it?
If not, dig around in your settings and make sure that you don’t have the audio turned off (or unchecked) in another window (i.e. QuickTime’s settings window).
    Hope this helps.

    Check out this link:

That should get you through this somewhat weird process. Once you read it it will make sense, and you can do what you need to.
