April 25, 2005 at 8:21 pm in reply to: exports problem. Need suggestions fast. Tick tock-Tick tockTry exporting a QT reference movie from FCP, then open it in QuickTime and export from there. If you still have a problem, try making it a self-contained movie file and try again. The good news is that you can still use FCP that way while waiting to see if it worked in QT. Good luck.

If that doesn’t work out for you, here is a link I just found in the DVDSP forums:
https://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
You could always go with a program like that (I think there are alot of them out there) to convert to DV outside of FCP. This is if you are still having FCP crash issues.
Good luck!

Actually, I’ve been hearing that the problem is with the 10.3.9 OS upgrade. You might want to re-install OS 10.3 then run the 10.3.8 combined updater to get to back to where you were before your OS upgrade.
Heh, I’ve gotten burned on those Apple updates (I think everyone has).[Shane Ross] “If the system is working fine…purring like a kitten, then why update? Updating can (as you found out) just lead to problems.”Sound advice, Shane. I’m going to wait a few months and see what happens before even trying the Tiger/FCP5 thing. (Anyone remember the early days of FCP4?) While the new features are cool, I don’t actually need multi-cam at the moment, and all our footage is currently SD, so again… why upgrade? When I see FCP5 is running rock-solid, I’m there.

Be sure to check your device settings tab of your edit to tape window. If your setup is like mine, you have like 100 settings to choose from. Don’t know what card you are using, but you should be able to setup whether you are connected component, SDI, etc. there.
Hope this helps.-Todd Beabout

April 25, 2005 at 5:27 pm in reply to: AVI stream, digibeta, or betasp which would give me the best quality and least trouble? They are all basically i/o cards that allow you to move video on and off your computer. If you will be doing anything other than DV, you will not only need one of these cards, but of course some tape decks and probably more storage. And those decks aren’t cheap… last time I checked a BetaSP deck that could record and playback was at least $5K, and up into to $20-30K range if you wanted to edit to it. Digibeta is around $45K (I think). Hope this helps.

Great question! Just letting you know… it happens to me too!
FWIW, we are running a few Symphonys on Unity. I though it might have something to do with different users/workstations digitizing clips from the same tape, but I don’t know. I know that it is not a repeated tape number in the same project because it will not let you add a new tape number if that number already exists in the project.
It’s a puzzle…-Todd Beabout

In my experience you get either one or the other: rt matte, or the attached audio.
I usually take the rt matte, and then import again (ignore alpha) to get my audio. From that point it is a bit of a pain to make sure they sync up, but it is very do-able.
I’ve tried (briefly) to think up a work around to synch these 2 clips I now have, but nothing really worked out like I hoped.
Anyone else have a way to do this?-Todd Beabout

April 25, 2005 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Jagged edges on background wall during AVID Speed changes–please helpYou have a few options as to how Avid handles frames. I believe it defaults to “Duplicated frames”. I usually use “Interpolate frames”, but you should experiment with a few of the settings and see if that helps your problem.

April 25, 2005 at 3:54 pm in reply to: AVI stream, digibeta, or betasp which would give me the best quality and least trouble?First of all, stay away from .avi files. That is a microsoft thing and you are now in a mac world. (There may be some program that can change the .avi to a .mov, but I would worry about taking the hit in quality that would be possible.)
Personally, I’d probably go with the beta sp. But do you even have a way to capture from beta?
[Lee Feigon] “some people have mentioned needing Aja Io, Kona or Blackmagic cards to really do this right”If you don’t have one of these cards how do you plan on capturing/outputting at all?
I guess you could always find a facility that has the right equipment to digitize it for you onto your Lacie drive. Then you could edit and take your drive back to the facility to get the end result to tape. If you are going to do that, though, I’d go with the digibeta.
So many options… Hope this helps.-Todd Beabout

OK, I’m gonna get way over my head here very quickly, but…
MPEG files are generally not really very “editable” in FCP. (Has something to do with the way GOP ‘group of pictures’ works.) This is also why it is difficult to place markers at a specific timecode in DVDSP. I have also brought .m2v files into FCP with very similar results to what you have described.
One other thing: if you are inserting the MPEGs into a DV timeline, FCP might kernel panic on trying to process whatever frame you are on. I guess you could try to create an MPEG-2 sequence before dropping the .m2v files in it. From there you would export a QT movie with DV compression. Man, this sounds complicated…
Maybe there is a program out there that will edit MPEG natively?BTW: FCP5 seems to have overcome some of the GOP/MPEG issues as it can edit in various MPEG formats “natively”. Very cool…
