I can’t seem to get dupe frame detector function to work in the timeline of FCP HD 4.5. I have a dupe edit in my timeline, but no color bar is visible anywhere indicating dupe frames. What am I doing so wrong??

This will only work if the actual same frame (same TC) from the same tape are in the same sequence. In other words, if your footage is actually the same frame (same image) but was digitized from a different tape, or even a different TC from the same tape FCP will not recognize it as duplicate (based on the image itself). Don’t know if this is what is happening with you or not…
Other than that, when I have dupe detection turned on I get that color bar above the clip.

No, it’s the exact same footage from the same tape. ABOVE the clip, huh? In the manual it sez Below the clip.

    will check, thanks.

Do you have dupe detection turned off?
Check the pop up menu along the bottom of the time to see.
I don’t have FCP open right now, but I believe it’s the little triangle at the bottom left of the timeline window.
Sometimes it seems to turn itself off for whatever reason.
