  • Ram is ram, it doesn’t matter where you get it from in terms of
Its capabilities. However sometimes it’s good to research the place your buying it from (reviews etc) because ram can fail (crucial.com for exame seem to fail a lot for me but are a lot cheaper). This won’t damage your computer but it will either not turn on if this happens, or you’ll get a kernel panic every time you start up meaning you have to replace it which is frustrating.

In regards to your computer, the intel chip is a lot of the price of it, so no it can’t be put into an older mac cos all the parts are incompatible. If you’re serious about editing, you should upgrade to a quad core anyway if you can, even the new quad core MacBook pro range or even an i5 or i7 iMac, although judging by what I’m reading the i5 would be more suitable for you because the i7 would probably be a waste of most for you 🙂

Ah good point lol, thanks for making me feel Stupid hehe! Why then is the (albeit very good) SD camera a higher bitrate than the HDV Z1?

Yeah i find it frustrating when I have 6 years experience with FCP and I find it difficult to get a job as AE, but people are making mistakes like that…

  • With that in mind, how should I set my compressor cluster up if my computer is the 27″ iMac with the 2.66ghz i5 processor inside? (8GB Ram) people hae suggested 1 virtual thing per every 2 cores, but I use 3 and it seems to go faster?

Interesting (but less than helpfully) I had this problem too, I’m not sure what exactly fixed it bur I known did everything from a COMPLETE deletion of final cut stdio (all system files), a disk permissions repair and I even reset the PRAM, then reinstalled final cut, saved the project as a new project and put intro a new sequence. And the reinstalled the kitchen sink….. Then that worked.

June 21, 2010 at 8:27 pm in reply to: Can’t get Mpeg4 file into FCP

There are quite a fewthreads regarding this already, but mp4 is not an ideal format to work in as it’s lossy and awkward. There are plugins by ‘calibrated’ which allow you todo this, but other than that the best bet is transcode using mpeg streamclip (free download).

  • Whch version of studio do you have? How much footage is there? Have you tried the DVD best quality preset in compressor because that does what it says on the tin…

June 21, 2010 at 7:17 am in reply to: Importing mpeg 4 into FCP

Ok thanks forth batch function info, but if you have loads of
Mp4 footage in folders this is not ideal, also mpeg streamclip transcoding loses quality which is not ideal, especially when you wait hours for it to all work at set quality- I was asking about a native plugin or some clever workaround allowing one to import mp4 files straight into final cut:s
