Can’t get Mpeg4 file into FCP
Hello…I just created an mpeg4 file by using Handbrake on a friend’s DVD. I just played it back in Quicktime and it looks fine. Though when I tried to bring it into FCP 6.0.6 I got the “File Error: 1file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown” error message. What does the extension have to be for an Mpeg 4? I’ve tried various ones to no avail.

Hi there…just found that the official extension is mp4, but when I changed it to that I still couldn’t get it into FCP 6.0.6. I’m I wrong in assuming that FCP takes such files?

There are quite a fewthreads regarding this already, but mp4 is not an ideal format to work in as it’s lossy and awkward. There are plugins by ‘calibrated’ which allow you todo this, but other than that the best bet is transcode using mpeg streamclip (free download).

First, if you want to keep a bit ofquality, you can not convert a highly compressed format (MPEG-2) to another highly compressed one (mp4). Then those are GOP based formats no good for editing at all.
Rip the DVD, extract the VOBs and use MPGstreamclip to convert the files to 8b Unc or Prores. Edit and make something decent.
