  • I have an iMac i5 with the entire FCS3. Everything runs very fast with HD material and color works perfectly. Technically Fonal Cut isn’t 64bit yet so it can’t use all 4cores, however features in the i5processor such as turbo boost are helpful here, and of course compressor has the virtual cluster feature which DEFINITELY speeds up things on a quad core. Thei7 would just do all of that margin faster but at this stage ur better off saving money for RAM and sticking with the i5 because none of FcS uses the cores properly anyway, but ram would enable you to run functions alongside each other with more ease, eg compress something whilst still editing in Fc (although I wouldn’t recommend rendering in compressor and final cut at the same time yet :S) As for the graphics card, what’s wrong with the 4850? The FCS doesn’t utiloze the graphics card anyway. Well, not really, the oS (snow Leo) does mean a better graphics card makes everything faster, but for editing, don’t worry about that at all.BUt in terms of the i5 vs core 2, think this way, if final cut is written in 64 bit (likely give. How apple have done this with everything else so far eg other pro apps like logic), then having a quad core will be worth ur while…

Thanks, but that still doesnt explain what the “color profile” bit in QuickTime means because it shows HDV footage as 1-1-1??? It may have or may not have anything to do with color sampling such as 4:2:2 but I’m interested to know what it does mean :s?

Even though you have a mouse mat, a lot of laser mice are laser sensors not optical (google the difference if you care). What this means is that you should make sure the surface you use for it is set up for that- the mousemat should have no design on it or anything, it should not be used on a White or paper surface or on a surface with any texture (ie wooden table). Some mouse mats work with optical mice but are too shiny for laser mice or have part of the design which is White which will reflect the laser- even a piece of square cardboard would be better:)

What surface are you using your mouse on? Is it the wired or wireless mighty mouse? (that does actually make a difference).

Final Cut Express is quite cheap, and if you are a teacher or lecturer you can get a discount as well…. There’s not much out which is good and cheap for mac which is like iMovie yet, although there has been another post in the cow talking about Lightworks becoming an open source NLE which may be worth investigating…

Select the hard disk you are trying to capture to (eg “Macintosh HD”) and press cmd+I it will tell you there your free space. If it’s less than about 15% of the overall hard disk, delete stuff!!!!!
