Core 2 Duo or Quad core – what’s better with FCP?
I’m currently upgrading my i-mac to a 27-inch for video editing with Final Cut Studio 3 and notice two main options: Intel Core 2 Duo and Quad core (in either i5 or i7 processors) . Anyone have experience/advice on which one is better for basic video editing? And are there any other options other than the ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB video card? Final Q – anyone know if Colour runs on an i-mac??? Andrei (Australia)

I have an iMac i5 with the entire FCS3. Everything runs very fast with HD material and color works perfectly. Technically Fonal Cut isn’t 64bit yet so it can’t use all 4cores, however features in the i5processor such as turbo boost are helpful here, and of course compressor has the virtual cluster feature which DEFINITELY speeds up things on a quad core. Thei7 would just do all of that margin faster but at this stage ur better off saving money for RAM and sticking with the i5 because none of FcS uses the cores properly anyway, but ram would enable you to run functions alongside each other with more ease, eg compress something whilst still editing in Fc (although I wouldn’t recommend rendering in compressor and final cut at the same time yet :S) As for the graphics card, what’s wrong with the 4850? The FCS doesn’t utiloze the graphics card anyway. Well, not really, the oS (snow Leo) does mean a better graphics card makes everything faster, but for editing, don’t worry about that at all.BUt in terms of the i5 vs core 2, think this way, if final cut is written in 64 bit (likely give. How apple have done this with everything else so far eg other pro apps like logic), then having a quad core will be worth ur while…

All the new Fxplugs runs in the GPU. Without the proper video card you get an error when you try to render 10b HD. Also if you are using a second monitor you need more GPU power.

That may be the case (re fxplugs and extra monitor) but the 4850 with 512mb can MORE than handle all of that. I know cos I do both of those things and look at various monitoring utilities and even then it allruns fine…
