That blurb was for the benefit of the gentleman who just crawled out from under a rock, ’cause he’s the only one migrating to Avid these days 🙂

I was just thinking yesterday, as Fedex dropped of my Kona LHe, how much I don’t miss Avid.

If you go with the panny and want a reality check before you deliver, one thing to consider is renting the Sony 20L5, if possible. In Boston they go for about $85 a day, and then if you get picked up you can decide what you can afford to spring for.

January 2, 2007 at 3:58 am in reply to: FCP Tutorial

I came to FCP from years of Avid (and D-Vision before that) earlier this year. Bought FCP for Avid editors and never needed it. Do the dvd & pdf tutorials, read every page of the manual (excellent documentation), search this forum, and that’s really all you need. Every question you’ll want to ask has already been answered, and nearly every feature your used to and many you wish you’d had are right there. It’s a pretty easy transition, all things considered, and I needed not one third party book to get up and running.

One suggestion – try not to learn the whole suite at once, it can be a bit overwhelming. Get a couple of FCP edis under your belt, then add in the rest of the programs gradually. I came to FCP fairly reluctantly, but wow, I am so glad I made the switch, keep an open mind, don’t try to make it an Avid, and you’ll really like it.

Did you make any changes to your OS lately? I had the same problem after an archive and reinstall, tech supports said the pro apps don’t like this. Trash all your compressor receipts, delete the program, reinstall, run software updates for compressor. Receipts are .pkg files in the hard drive library receipts folder.

  • [Rennie] “Panasonic told us in the early development stage of the HVX200 that the reason they could do what they did was with P2 there are no heads (HD heads) in the camera. The HD head drum assembly costs them something like $13,000.00 to manufacture ( I think that is varicam).”

[walter biscardi] “the 1400 IS affordable. Compare that with HDCAM and HDCAMSR and see how affordable $25,000 is. I purchased the 1200A when it was $32,000 for all the cards and inputs and I own a very small operation.

I guess it’s all relative. For me, affordable right now is defined as – can I reasonably recoup the cost of this gear on what this project pays, and right now, on this particular project, I can’t. Further, I can’t really speculate as to whether it will be recouped in the long haul with other projects right now. I do, however, see your point, and Rennie’s explanation makes the price point clearer.

[walter biscardi] “As for Monitoring, look at the Panasonic 1700W and 2600W LCD displays or their Pro Plasma lines. Again, VERY affordable.”

I thought you didn’t recommend this for color correcting, or did I misread some of your earlier posts? I know you like it for a client monitor, but I have no need of a client monitor, don’t have clients in for edits, home studio. My hope is that the 1700w is acceptible for basic color correction – getting a fairly close approximation of what my image looks like – what say you, Walter?

Any guess on how big a file a qt 5 minute dvcprohd movie would be, and how long it might take to render one out (system specs below)? I agree on renting a deck, it’s a hassle and a big wate of time, but it does force you to learn – if you want to get paid.

Glad I asked. Looks like a deck rental is the best option – the only option, really.

Yes, but… there is no set!!! Ever shot on a working lobster boat in rough sea? There’s no laptop there, no sticks, no camera bag, there’s not really even room for me, never mind an assistant. How about on a coast guard cutter on patrol, or climbing a steep grade covered with snow following a rock sculptor, or shooting a live event in a public place? Don’t mean to rant, Shane, but the problem is a laptop can’t go where I go most times, and most times I go there myself, and there is no control of the shooting environment – you miss the shot, you are screwed. Sadly, this camera does not work with a p2 workflow for run & gun, it just doesn’t. It’s a camera primarily for indie filmmakers of a certain kind. But, the thing is, I KNOW the image is best in it’s class, that’s why I’m doing flips and twists to try & find a workaround to an essentially unworkable situation, why I’m so bummed that Panasonic priced me out of the p2 game, because if I could afford a pocketful of p2 cards, I’d buy ’em and be done with it. Even with the firestore, handheld becomes a real issue, with two wireless, a big battery, a bracket one and a shotgun in the mount. I’m in good shape, but not good enough to be solid enough for long enough.

I’m looking right at one, keep my dvx in it. Great bag, glad to know I can probably hang on to it.
