  • So the main advantages are FCP performance and loss of time, not visual quality. For me, seems like if I’m only doing a 5 min. spot, I can get the benefits of dvcprohd with the render afterwards and invest in less storage – 5 minutes worth as opposed to 5 hours worth per spot.

  • John,

Thanks for the detailed post. One question regarding option two. Instead of capturing to a different codec, why not capture as hdv and then just conform your final edit using a different codec, say dvcprohd or sheer? It seems like there’s no degradation on ingest, only once editing begins with cuts, dissovled, cc, etc., and that degradation doesn’t actually happen until you render anyway (or does it?), so if you have enough cpu power to edit in hdv, why use all the additional space for raw footage?

  • I had a nasty repetative stress injury in my right hand & wrist several years back, and one of the changes I made as a result was to become mouse ambidextrous. Over the course of a day, I regularly swap the mouse between left & right sides, and it’s been a very helpful part of my strategy to avoid a repeat injury. Takes some patience to learn, but well worth it.

    Bret,

THANK YOU. I was so close, but I was missing step two, and when it wasn’t working, I went to the DSR manual, and the way I read it convinced me it couldn’t be done. Audio sounds fine at 32k, it was well recorded. My weekend just got better.

According to the DSR-11 manual, you can only record two channels in 4 channel (32k)audio mode.

“When recording in 4 channel mode on this unit, audio signals are recorded only in channels 1/2.”

The way I’m reading it, it leaves two blank tracks available, which can be dubbed on another deck. The dsr has no dubbing feature.

I’m just trying to deliver a 4 track dvcam master, and the dsr is the only deck I have. What’s the minimum deck that will do this for me?

  • Well, here’s one last suggestion. Instead of capturing dvcprohd, maybe you should consider the Sheer Codec – from reliable posters elsewhere, it gets raves. Then, you could capture with your hv10, keep your tc, edit in hdv & monitor with your LHe, and then render in the Sheer Codec, which is supposed to be comparable in quality to dvcpro hd, and requires about half the drive space. Search the FCP/Cow for details.

February 13, 2007 at 8:11 pm in reply to: Odd duplicate file name post – can’t batch capture

Just figured it out – first off, the file being referenced was from another project, but I was using it in a sequence in this project that I created days earlier in this project. Deleting that sequence solved the problem. Somehow, even though I was nowhere near that sequence today, it became corrupt and was screwing things up.

February 4, 2007 at 7:11 pm in reply to: upgraded OS and now FCP won’t capture

I had a similar problem, according to apple tech support, the pro apps do not like changes to the OS.

Here’s what I had to do to get everything working happily again.

Delete all pro apps prefs and receipts (important), reinstall entire suite, run software update.

Not fun, I know, but it will work, and may head off other problems you’re destined for within the suite that you just haven’t discovered yet.

I’m thinking of picking up a Marantz PMD 670 for the same use. Seems to be the most popular in this category, been out for a while, well thought of.

January 23, 2007 at 6:10 pm in reply to: hdv captured as dv needs render?

Using a canon cam, an hv10, which is in fact where I think I made my mistake. There was no problem with the file, it all just required rendering, which it shouldn’t have. The mismatch was on the capture side.
