  • Stand Alone Field Audio Recorder for Use in FCP workflow

Can anyone recommend a stand alone field audio recorder that could be easily used in a final cut pro work flow. This is for a show where we will be recording a lot of musical performances. Our sound guy uses a mixer so we don’t necessarily need a mulitrack recorder, just a good field recorder that can record at least stereo and be used efficiently in an FCP workflow. Right now our FCP machine does not have any additional video or audio cards, so we have an apple tower with intel chips that is out of the box. So the only inputs on the machine are firewire, usb and the little mini mic input. Are there any DAT machines that have a firewire or USB output?

    Thanks again,
    Rich

I’m thinking of picking up a Marantz PMD 670 for the same use. Seems to be the most popular in this category, been out for a while, well thought of.

I’d recommend any of the Flash Card recorders that are available from several major manufacturers. I have two Edirol units that I love. They record up to 24-bit Wave files to a Compact Flash card and I rip the files directly to the computer.

Which is the cheapest one with TC? Fostex FR2?

I don ‘t know that any of them have timecode. Maybe the Sony, which is quite expensive.

    Hello

Have you looked at the Tascam HD-P2?

I have yet to use it in conjunction with FCP but it has robust Timecode features, generates a XML file and I have been happy with its performance and features.

    Just a thought

    PS-

Its has a built in FireWire port for direct connection to your. Alternatively you can get a card reader, eject the Flash media from the Tascam and copy to you Mac via USB.

Wow, I just checked out an Edirol unit at B&H and it’s a lot cheaper than I expected!

Question: does anyone know if there’s a way to use an XLR mic with this (only has 1/8 minijack in, and a built-in mic) without having to lug around a Beachteck type device?

Edirol makes a heaftier (and more expensive) unit with XLR, otherwise, check out Marantz.

Sound Devices 7-series. The 702T would work perfectly.

You may want to check out the Deva recorders from Zaxcom: https://www.zaxcom.com/

You get 8 tracks of audio with timecode. It records to an internal HD & can export to DVD-RAM.
