    Hi Bret,

I’m new to macs too, but I can share a bit of what I’ve learned. I read that you don’t need ecc ram, its overkill – I have non and it is just fine. Crucial seems to be the overwhelming favorite brand.

As for fw drives, 400 will work as good as 800 for dv. I build my own with bytecc enclosures from newegg and seagate drives (had bad luck with western digital). For HD it seems that people are using SATA drives now. There are lots of external arrays and cards, just search the list. One I’m thinking about is promax’s Satamax array. Good company, good support.

Best of luck, I’ll be watching this thread to learn some myself too.

I had a similar problem with my new g5 quad core – the os went berserk, then itwouldn’t boot, and each time the fans went crazy. I was sure it was a hardware. Turned out to be an OS problem, and apple tech support had me reinstall my system and it was fine. The fans go nuts when the hardware can’t commnunicate with the OS for some reason. The apple tech also advised me to shut down at the end of the day, as opposed to sleep, which he said clogged up the system cache. Wish I had more info, but I’m just coming over to mac, best of luck.

Well, I’m not too keen on WD right now, I’ve sent about 5 back last year 🙂 Does the cache make a difference for dv editing?

Actually I haven’t even popped it in yet – haven’t even loaded up FCP to play with – still too busy, sticking with XPRO til I get a free weekend. But thanks for reminding me, I admit – I forgot it came with a dvd. Still, I’ll probably buy a set for the whole studio package, in particular DVDSP.

At the end of the year I was in the same spot – XPRO on PC and very happy with it. But, I had to spend some cash, and there really was not much to think about. I bought a G5 quad core, haven’t even installed FCP. Now, I can install XPRO on my mac, and add FCP later. The difference is in the hardware – Mojo – 1 uncompressed stream – or AJA or Blackmagic. Not a hard decision, is it? I’m reading FCP for Avid editors by Diana Weynand, probably buy some training media as well, and just accept the fact that Avid has ceeded my end of the market to FCP. Bottom line – your partner is right.

I just got two dell 1905fp 19 inch monitors and am happy with them so far – plenty of real estate. If you call dell and haggle, they’ll give you a price break – I got $35 off each.

    Hi Bob,

I’m in a similar situation. Just got the g5 quad core 2.5, with 512 RAM and a 250 SATA. Shopped around a bit and bought 4 gigs of gigaram from newegg.com. Gigaram got a good review at anandtech, and the price was right – $370 for 2 (2×1) kits. I went with the Geoforce 6600, as the 7800 seemed overkill – I dont do heavy duty motion graphics, figure the 6600 and the quad core should be able to handle modest stuff. Haven decided on an external SATA array yet, leaning towards the Promax SATAMAX, check it out. Might add a second internal SATA for firewire/dv editing, but I own a bunch of external firewire drives which should suffice for now. For monitors, went with 2 Dell 1905fp’s, based on recommendations I read here and elsewhere. None of it’s here yet, so I can’t say how any of it performs 🙂 hope the RAM tip helps anyway.
