Hi, my name is Bret. I have been editing on a system made by Canopus for about seven years now. It has been a good system, and able to grow with my learning. But it is time to get a new system. Instead of staying on a PC I have been learning FCP for the last couple months, and have decided to go in that direction.
I have a couple of questions I hope are appopreate for this form about seting up a system to cut on. Now I built the PC’s I cut on before so I have some basic knowledge of computers(PC). But this is my first time with Apple, so forgive me if these questions are real basic. I have to order everything and don’t want to waste time on getting equipment that I may have proplems with.

First off I already purchased final cut studio, and will be working mostly with DV, HDV and maybe some DVCPRO50. And with the recsent release of Panasonics little HD camera, I want to keep that in mind to grow to. (P2 cards)

My first question has to do with RAM. Do I need ECC SDRAM, or will non ECC SDRAM do? (looking at the cost differance)

Next has to do with an ext. hard drive. I’m looking at either the Maxtor or G-Tech firewire 800 drives. Is this a setup that will have the substaned transfer capabilities needed?

And does one brand seem to have less or more problems working properly.

Again I appreciate someone answering such basic questions. This is my first time with Apple.

    Thank you,
    Bret

    Hi Bret,

I’m new to macs too, but I can share a bit of what I’ve learned. I read that you don’t need ecc ram, its overkill – I have non and it is just fine. Crucial seems to be the overwhelming favorite brand.

As for fw drives, 400 will work as good as 800 for dv. I build my own with bytecc enclosures from newegg and seagate drives (had bad luck with western digital). For HD it seems that people are using SATA drives now. There are lots of external arrays and cards, just search the list. One I’m thinking about is promax’s Satamax array. Good company, good support.

Best of luck, I’ll be watching this thread to learn some myself too.
