  • Which brand of internal SATA drive for G5 quad?

Posted by Stu Siegal on January 31, 2006 at 4:03 pm

Not familiar with Mac’s yet, just coming over from PC/avid, and I’ve had it with the unreliablility of fw drives. What are the most reliable drives for internal use in the G5? I know the G5 will hold a 500mb drive, which should equal two of my external fw drives. Why brand and model are the most reliable? And which online vendors are the best for Mac stuff?

    Thanks,

    Stu

I hear that Western Digital just came out with a 500 GB drive with a 16 mb cache:

When I bought a SATA drive last year I went with one that was smaller because all the 500 GB drives only had an 8 MB cache.

So that’s something to consider. I usually get WD drives and I’ve been happy with them. I also know people who swear they’re terrible. I dunno, I’ve never had a problem with on myself.

I use either Hitachi Deskstars or Seagate Barracudas. I’ve had great experience with both.

Well, I’m not too keen on WD right now, I’ve sent about 5 back last year 🙂 Does the cache make a difference for dv editing?

beaware that new WD is incopartible with Macs because they use SSC technology. New seagate drives got it too, but there is utility for DOS that turns this feature off. WD have no options to turn off Spread Spectrum.
