  • upgraded OS and now FCP won’t capture

Posted by George Cragg on February 4, 2007 at 6:25 pm

    Hello,

I recently upgraged the OS on my G5 dual 2gig to 10.4.8 from panther and now FCP won’t capture. It says the DV device, a Sony DSR11, is missing however Log and Capture says VTR OK and will control the deck and read TC. Frustrating. I tried trashing the prefs. Any suggestions,

I am running FCP version 5.0.4

    thanks

    George

you are not alone, I ended up taking the footage to DVCPRO HD to get it in my machine. I’m tired of codecs that fail, so I do everything dvcpro hd.

I had a similar problem, according to apple tech support, the pro apps do not like changes to the OS.

Here’s what I had to do to get everything working happily again.

Delete all pro apps prefs and receipts (important), reinstall entire suite, run software update.

Not fun, I know, but it will work, and may head off other problems you’re destined for within the suite that you just haven’t discovered yet.

There are old threads that discuss some issues with Firewire devices after you do an OS Upgrade. When upgrading from one OS to the next, your best method is to erase the entire hardddrive and start fresh. Upgrading one OS on top of an older one is generally fraught with issues, especially with the pro-apps.

But as I said, if you go back probably a year and a do a Search Posts you’ll see some tips on how to get your firewire devices working correctly again. Has nothing to do with the codec, has everything to do with the OS Upgrade.

Trash your QuickTime Receipts and you will be up and running. Do the search on the forum for more information.

That is why I always recommended that when you move to a new version of the OS (10.2 to 10.4 for example) that you do a complete erase and install. Sure it takes longer but it it a tom cleaner and can save headaches like the one you are having.

I agree completely, however, I’m writing after installing fresh drives and a fresh system. I replaced my 250gb’s with fresh 500’s, installed a system from zero and that’s when I had the problem. FCP 5.x.x.x is a mess, it’s not stable, it’s not faster … it’s a gimmick to get everyone (including me) to send in our good old discs. I asked apple for my old 5.0 ndoscs back and of course, they refused. 5 worked, 5+ doesn’t (for me) It”s a shame. I hope some of you going to NAB are willing to hold their feet to the fire, I’m not going any longer, I’m tired of being lied to.

When you send in your discs, you could have made a disc image or even copied the discs. I have had only a few MINOR problems with FCP. 4.5, 5.0.4 and 5.1.2 currently all work great for me. Compressor is extremely fast on my Mac Pro Dual 3.0. Sure a lot of my third party plug-ins aren’t compatible with the intel.

FCP version 5.1.2 and the Varicam are a perfect match.
