Thank you Steven, this was it. I was so focused on manipulating the stroke, the type never even occured to me. Out of curiosity, do you know why the mask didn’t work on the paint stroke clone layer?

DUH. Show overlays, at the very top, was not checked. Knew it was something dumb, but thanks for getting me to see it.
P.S. Love the DVD. Even though I rarely use motion, I’ve used some of your tips and actually looked like I knew what I was doing!

Yes. And so, for that matter, are safe zones, and I can’t see those either.

Nope, just the ones to reposition, rotate, or transform an object in the canvas.

The Seagate Free agent fw drives, available at the Mac store, have five year warranties. You can’t beat that. I just got a 1tb for $179.

Yes, AE would be ideal, but because I don’t use it much, I just built a preset in Compressor from scratch, as opposed to Brian’s preset, and got the encode out in time. Still, the original problem puzzles me- why wouldn’t qt conversion apply the letterbox?
