  • I need to take a 16:9 movie and export it as 4:3 letterboxed. This way, when it goes up on youtube, the client can add links in the lower black box. They can live with the combo letterbox pillarbox.

I would just upload a qt output from compressor using brian gary’s preset, but I am getting a white line along the right side pillarbox that I can’t figure out how to get rid of when I use his preset. For some reason, I don’t get it when coming out of qt conversion, but now I can’t get qt conversion to letterbox!

    Example of the white line:

If I could resolve the white line coming out of compressor, I would forget about the qt conversion problem.

    Help appreciated, clock is ticking.

OK, I came across the cause of the problem, figured I would post it to save others the trouble, as it is caused by a set of circumstances other FCP users may encounter.

Seems the combination of 10.5.5 and ati x1900 cards in G5 quads is the culprit.

Here’s the full discussion on the apple forums.

Some people have reported 10.5.6 fixing the problem. Just tried it and it did in fact work for me.

Yes, it’s a youtube thing. For future searchers, should this come up, a custom frame size of 1440×1440 is what you want for hdv to go to 4:3 letterbox of 16:9 material in youtube (don’t try to edit in 1440×1440, though, just dump the final cut in and render). This will allow you to correctly bring in a lower third in fcp for part of your sequence.

No difference in output, of course, Gary, but knowing the Kona control panel when sitting in on my last two clients systems, it has been a big help knowing how to work with it. Sorry I wasn’t clearer.

My career path is very similar to yours, right down to the recent HD client. I went with a kona card, and can’t say enough good things about it. In addition to customer support, which is PHENOMENAL, aja products are much more commonplace (among my clients at least), which makes compatibility between your system and your clients a non-issue.

I get this from time to time too, always assumed it was a compression problem due to a combination of the contents of the footage and the transition. Seen it using dvcprohd footage, hdv, and dv, most often on a flash or vapor across transition. Saw it just today on a vapor across transition when compressing a sequence for web output – it wasn’t in the sequence, but was in the compressed qt.

It’s the brand. I had this problem, your G5 doesn’t like that batch of verbatims – even though your mbp does. It happens.

OK, a trip to the apple forums provided the answer, figured I’d post here for future searchers.

The trick is to clone the group, and the cloned group will have a Speed retiming parameter.

I thought I was the only person who did this – and reacted the same way each time.

Well, the autosave was on the raid, and so basically I the night re-creating my cut. Thanks to all, sorry if I was not clear or got short tempered, just a bad situation and a painful lesson learned. Only silver lining is that the cut is without a doubt better 🙂

FWIW, software called boomerang claims to recover overwritten files – but it doesn’t support .fcp files. Yesterday was just that kind of day.
