  • LaCie Drive demounts randomly – something to worry about?

Posted by Rob Grauert on March 7, 2009 at 4:38 pm

    Hi,

I posted this in the Mac OS X forum, but got no response yet:

I have a weird issue with my LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB hard drive. I have the power switch on the back set to automatic so it powers down when my computer goes to sleep. The problem is, sometimes it demounts on it’s own and I get the “improper device removal” error. My only concern is losing data or causing any damage. Does anyone know of a solution? Or are the chance of losing data minute?

If it makes a difference, I have it connected to my Mac Pro with FW800.

    Thank you.

THere are a lot of people that will never use LaCie drives for critical data (or any data) but yes this is a problem especially if this ever happens when you are writing to or reading from the drive. a new 500 GB FW harddrive is less than a $140, how much is the data on that drive worth.

Even better are the new redundant drives

of course you can get better $/GB on the larger drives.

Remember no drive is 100%, you should always have a backup.

The Seagate Free agent fw drives, available at the Mac store, have five year warranties. You can’t beat that. I just got a 1tb for $179.

Bad setting there Rob. I know it makes you feel green, but resist the temptation to save the Earth and turn all sleep settings on your “workstation” and drives to off. If not, some day you’re going to capture hours and hours of stuff and you’ll wake that drive up and find it gone.

Really? I didn’t know that, Dave. Thanks.

I’ll just take the others’ advice and not store anything too important on there. I’ll see if I can get a mirrored RAID from the budget of a project I may be involved in soon.

    Thanks again guys.

Wait, this brings up another question then. I have my Mac set up to put the internal hard drives to sleep when they are not used for a period of time too. Should I not do that either?

    Thanks

Go back and read my post. All ebergy saving settings should be set to “never.”

Really? Not even allow the computer to sleep? I feel like that would be bad for the computer…like it needs to take a break or something, at least while I sleep. I’ll take your word for it though.

Here’s a quote from the AJA Kona website:

Q: Sleep settings and Energy Saver (System Preferences)—how should it be set?
A: We recommend you set the Energy Saver “Sleep” setting to “Never” for optimum operation. Also, there is no problem using the screen saver.

What David meant was that you choose setting “never” for computer (and all hard drives) to put
    itself to sleep.
Of course you are going to put the computer to sleep (with all its drives connected)
when you stop working on it (and when you are going to sleep).

So, you are going to do it manually by choosing “Sleep” in Apple menu.
