LaCie Drive demounts randomly – something to worry about?

I have seen this issue when connecting the drive with a power adapter from another Laice product. Could this be the problem?

As others have already noted, take this off automatic and never allow the computer or any hard drives to go to sleep.
As for LaCie, I have four and five year old drives that still work fine. We have a pair of LaCie S2S 1.25TB RAIDs that have edited for three years now without fail. Both broadcast and documentary HD projects. I just took them offline due to a new SAN being installed and we’re going to use them for temporary backup of material now.
There are a lot of folks who come on here and say their bad, but we’ve only had one LaCie product go bad since I started the company.

I’ve had the same experience, for example, I’ve still got a 6 year old LaCie working (most of that time is switched on) and I’ve got another 4 running.
Had one failed in all those years, and what is interesting; it is LaCie 500 GB d2.Before it’s gone south, I’ve had the similar signs like Rob, wouldn’t mount, had to restart the computer,
then it’d come back with the message “The computer doesn’t recognise the device” or something like that.Week or two after that it couldn’t mount any more, but it was backed up and no drama.

I too am a fan of LaCie, I once accidently dropped one in water (dont ask how) and opened it up, let it dry….next day lost NO footage, too this day still works fine I just use it as a spare harddrive for files that I can afford to lose. I’m only a student so ill stay with LaCie until I can afford something like a caldigit or g-raid set-up; but until then LaCie are great drives in my opinion 🙂

I have had horrible experiences with LaCie’s, every one that I have owned has gone bad, I had one Extreme Big that had to be replaced twice before I just threw it out. Have gotten several that were DOA. So I stay away from them but this was several years back when they seemed to be having a QC problem. I have never own there 4 or 5 bay enclosures though.
Personally for small travel drives I buy OWC drives, between me and a couple of friends we have several dozens drives and hardly a problem among them.

I think when it comes to hard drive brands, it’s one of those things where a some people have a lot of problems and others have no problems at all.
Personally, I’ve never had a problem with a LaCie. I have one that I got in 2005 that is still running problem free. My d2 Quadra just demounts occasionally when I wake up my computer.
Luckily, it hasn’t erased anything, but I’m hoping the advice I got from this thread keeps it from demounting. I have a feeling it was the “automatic” setting I had the drive set to. The drive I got in 2005 doesn’t have a switch; it’s just always on, and that’s probably why I never had a problem.

haha well after I finished my first year of studying digital television last year I thought it would be smart to get my bag clean and washed ready for the new year (4 months off…way too long) ; at any rate I took out all pens and my laptop EXCEPT the lacie drive which was hidden at the bottom. I placed it in water to soak only to come back a day later to find my poor LaCie drive soaked, it was also my only copy of my work for the entire year. So i took it apart figuring that it doesnt exactly withstand warranty so what can it hurt giving it a shot at drying out….next day I plugged it straight into a macbook pro and was surprise to see it automatically detected and was ready to store once again.
Since that stupid mistake I now have everything backed up twice and VERY important projects stored on multiple dual layer dvd data discs at one of my relatives house…so even if the house burnt down I would still have those precious projects to look back at when I retire. BTW I’m only 19 so I dont even know if there will be something to play them in the future…I mean VHS its only a matter of time until DVD is on the chopping block, if not is already.Trent Whittington – Currently studying Associate Degree in Digital Television

Good one Trent. I can honestly say I’ve never sent a drive through the wash! ha ha!
I did however knock over a RAID I guess back in 2003 which at the time was HUGE corporation. It was running and as the system was digitizing I was cleaning up around the console and I got something caught in the cables and knocked it right off the counter to the floor. Still connected to the computer.
I figured it was a dead unit for sure, but I turned it off, reset it on the counter, restarted everything and it actually worked. We then went on to call that the “Wally Drop Test” which thankfully has never been repeated! 🙂
