There are two ways to play back audio in the timeline, assuming the layer has audio enabled using the little speaker button in the timeline:

    1. Press the . key on the numeric keypad
    2. Make a RAM preview, making sure the little speaker button in the time controls palette is enabled.

You can also scrub audio by holding down the ctrl (cmd on mac) key and dragging the current-time indicator. I believe this does not work with MP3s. By the way, it’s best to convert all MP3s to WAV or AIFF if they need to be used in AE.

For more info, search the help under “RAM preview” and “previewing audio”.

  • Computer monitors use square pixels. As a result, 640 pixels by 480 pixels on a computer screen looks 4:3, as you’d expect.

However, the NTSC TV spec calls for 720 pixels by 480 (or 486) pixels to look 4:3 on a TV.

Huh? 720×480 is not 4:3. Wassup?
This actually works if the pixels are not square. In this case, the pixels are tall rectangles, so 720×480 works out to 4:3. So when a 720×480 image is played on a TV, the image looks right, because it displays tall pixels.

DV widescreen (or 16:9, not anamorphic) is also 720×480 pixels, but the pixels are not square, nor are they tall. They are actually wide: 1.2 to 1. However, if you tell AE that the footage is NTSC widescreen, it interprets the footage properly. Look in the help under “pixel aspect ratio correction” for more info.

So it’s not lenses, it’s pixel aspect ratio: square, tall, or wide.

Check out this article by Rick Gerard.

There’s also more info in the help. Search using “widescreen” and “pixel aspect ratio correction”, as mentioned.

You need to attach a slider “expression control” to your amplitude variable and animate the slider value.

Search the COW for “amplitude”. There was a recent post covering this.

I get that every now and then — not sure why, but quitting and relaunching AE fixes it.

Don’t forget to save incrementally. (file01.aep, file02.aep, etc.)

Assuming you’re talking Windows (you didn’t say), I recommend using AE Windows to render to WMV. Using the “audiences” settings under “options”, you can customize it nicely.

Next to the desired property (position, rotation, scale, for example) there should be a little triangle. If you click it, the value graph should be revealed.

It’s in the help under “Fine-tuning animation>Using the Value graph to change a layer property value”.

    Assuming you’re on OSX,

The extra one lies in the AE package on OSX. Ctrl-click on the AE app’s icon in the applications folder, then choose “show package contents”. The extra plug should be in the MacOS folder therein, in a “Plug-ins” folder.

  • It might slow down the opening and saving of the AEP file, but not the display of the current frame or the rendering of the comp.
