Yep — that’s the way it works. You need to fade out the opacity of an unaffected copy of the layer to gradually reveal the affected layer.

It’s actually because you’ve made the solid bigger. The masks respect the original size and were rasterized at that size. I believe they fixed this in 6.5, so the masks continuously rasterize as the solid is enlarged.

Also, you can make a masked solid that follows the strings and apply stroke to it. Use that as a track matte for a copy of the footage, but running one or two frames behind the original. That way, you’re using the stroked masks to reveal the footage where the strings are not.
This copy is placed over the original to hide the strings.

Good question. As far as I know, “Holiday for Strings” is the classic example of the genre. It was used for the signature closing of the Red Skelton show, and was actually written in 1944 by David Rose.
Maybe it’s “50’s orchestral popular music”. That probably doesn’t help you much, but maybe Googling “Percy Faith” and “Andre Kostelanetz” might get you closer. Maybe adding “hygiene” or “muzak” might help. 🙂

Avid likes straight alpha, not premultiplied. Did you render with straight alpha from AE?

AE 101:
To do anything to footage, audio or an image, it has to be imported into the currently open project, then dragged into a new or existing composition as a layer.
Effects have to be applied to a layer in a composition. You select the layer, then choose the desired effect from the effects menu.
Everything has to be rendered. Nothing can be done in real time in AE.
