One would think that AE would allow you to instantly change an objects color at certain points on the timeline without creating any additional layers. If it’s possible, I have no idea how to do it. Why are all the simple things so hard? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you’re talking about a solid’s colors or text colors, try adding the Hue/Saturation filter and keyframing it’s settings over time. No need to add layers.

I’m trying to change a solid’s color instantaneously. I’d have to set keyframes 1-2 frames apart to achieve that hue/saturation, causing a ‘flash’ as it tries to go through the color spectrum

    Dennis,
Don’t forget about Hold keyframes. Will do exactly what your looking for with just one key per color change.

    Render>fill can also be used.
