It’ll take time to get unto speed every time you hit play if shared out
Transcode all your rushes to 1080 prores proxy and put on a smaller pegasus and cut off that locally.
Theres no reason for the proxy to be on the same machine as the master rushes. (which you’ll have a second copy of on a similar raid incase the promise fails )When you hit render in anything on the Mac Pro it’ll take all the cores.. and anything connected to share will choke.
fyi I am getting 750>800MBs over 10Gig between macs running smb with a few tweaks here and there. Which is plenty. It’s not 10gig. It’s whats either end thats going to cause you issues.
Remember – No one will thank you when it starts to fall over mid post production.

Can you define Master ? Final rendered Quicktime ?
Where do the Project files go ? XMLs ? Artwork ? Audio ? Gfx ? Scritps? fcp/avid projects?
I take it the Master > Server is just so you have a copy of final flat QT online all the time ?
First of all going to separate ext 4TB disks would be a no no . Are they barcoded ? How do you find Disk X rushes?
The disk backup as you say is exactly that, a backup.
Are the rushes edited off the server or local HD ?
Simple structure
Hard Disk / 2 folders1,MEDIA
2,SETUPSin MEDIA
/RUSHES
/GFX
/AUDIO
/OFFLINES
/DELIVERYin RUSHES
/OrigCAMERA
/TranscodesForEditin AUDIO
/VO
/MUSIC
/MIX
/STOCKin OFFLINE & DELIVERY
/001_DATE_DISCRIPTION
ie /DELIVERY/001_02-04-2014-FILM01_OFFLINE_V002
That way folders are in order date created.
SETUPS
/FCP
/AE
/PREMIERE
etc..That way setups folder is small and quick to backup every hour to something like Dropbox
Backup should look like this
SERVER1_Storage (ONLINE)> SERVER2_STORAGE (BACKUP/NEARLINE) > TAPE(LTO / ARCHIVE)
MEDIA > BACKUP > ARCHIVE
So you editor X wants rushes from Project X its pretty simple > SERVER > Project>Media>Rushes >
If he/she wants to find all shots of “Pigs in Mud” then you need a MAM

I’d go for more spindles.
12Gig and room to grow.

And at least Raid6 for that lot. 16TB gone… boom! 🙁

It’s just a shame it’s a PRE process..
So LOG process > Clipped > CC .. 🙁

Unmount NFS and mount via AFP
***WAIT – unmount NFS ? Do you mean DISMOUNT the Promise that you mounted with NFS, and remount it with AFP ? Then the libraries will dismount. Or did you drag the libraries from the Promise onto the local desktop, so you don’t care anymore ?Nope. With the Promise mounted only over AFP reopen FCPX. The libraries on Promise still open if they were left open.
ReOpen FCP-X ( libraries still open )
*** – so you remounted with AFP. When you SAVE, it is saving to the libraries that are currently on your desktop (because if you mount with AFP, you can’t write back to the Promise via AFP when running FCP-X) – please explain. There is no SAVE in FCP-X ?
