    Folks,

Need some help on selecting a new RAID. First I do lots of old format stuff BETA, DV just got my first 2K project, expecting a couple of 4K projects in the future. I am PC based user and right now I am looking at the following two options which are in my current budget:

Sonnets Fusion DX800 RAID — Plus side I can daisy chain and still use the same controller card so easy to expand. Negative I am not sure the throughput is sufficient to support 2K and 4K formats

Proavio EB800MSV2-F32TR — Plus 12G backbone and support 4K formats. Negative its not expandable. Any additional RAIDs would demand a second controller card

If anyone has any experience with either of these two or a better suggestion would to hear back.

Looking to make this purchase by next week

    Thanks!

    Lou

Hi Lou, if you poke down a few threads you can see some details about the Proavio EB800v2 that I built from the bare bones case. I’m running it off of an Areca 1223 which is only 6G speed, but it works fine for my needs since I primarily work with 1080/30p and 1080/60p. I haven’t tested with the 12G Areca card, but my hunch is that it would be a good match for 4K. It’s a very sturdy and well designed piece of hardware and the customer support at Proavio is excellent.

If you are planning for 4K make sure and get larger drives up front. I populated with 2TB enterprise drives and striped as RAID-6 which gave me 12 TB after format. It’s already at 70% capacity (we’re burning through tons of source footage). I know that there’s an 8TB enterprise coming out soon, but not by next week. There are 6TB drives currently available at least consumer rated, not sure about whether they have enterprise rated available yet. Otherwise I’d recommend 4TB enterprise which have been available for a long time and more cost efficient and well tested by now.

both Proavio and Sonnet make SAS expander boxes. Both are excellent. Don’t compare apples to oranges. If you do some simple research you will see that Proavio makes a 12g SAS expander product. And so do plenty of other companies shown here on Creative Cow.

    Bob,

Thanks for the insight, I did call Proavio directly and talked to there technical support team, they said there was no expansion possibilities for their EB800MSV2 PCI-e based version at this time. I did go back to there website, and noted that the Thunderbolt solution provides future expansion and their DS316JS rack mount can be expanded but nothing I could find for EB800MSV2 PCI-e version. Having said that and based your feedback I will call back Proavio on Tuesday and check my facts.

    Thanks again for the help

    Lou,

At this time we don’t have a 12G product with expansion.
We plan on a 12G rack mount DS316jS in the future.

Bob is familiar with the DS316JS as he’s installed
    It’s predecessor, the IS316JS before.

Lou, you’re welcome to call me today at my direct # below…same with you Bob, feel free to give me a ring.

If your looking at 4K its not just speed. Your gonna fill em up quick!.

    I’d go for more spindles.

    12Gig and room to grow.

Having had in depth conversations with Lou, (including this past Saturday) I can assure you that he’s well aware of the MANY options we discussed, one on one.
