Yes, check the square pixel thing for sure. Usually the problem is that there is a small space between the the layers where they meet, which can be solved by enlarging each layer by .5% or something like that. If your layers are overlapping then perhaps try shrinking them by .5%.

Actually, that does sound pretty large for h.264. I’ve got a BBC clip that I downloaded from the HD section on Apple’s website that’s a minute and a half long at 1080P (24fps) and it’s only 93 MB, and it looks phenomenal.

Make sure you have the two pass VBR opton checked; that should help a lot if it was unchecked before. Not sure what else could be giving you that big a file. What is your source footage?

  • The problem with H.264 is that if you don’t have Quicktime 7, you can’t see it. It is about the nicest looking web video I’ve ever seen though.

I’d also suggest getting a RAID disk array to store all you footage files on. This will speed things up for two reasons: 1) RAIDS are faster than single disks, and 2) Having AE run off a separate drive than where your footage is located will give you better performance.

Here’s to hoping Adobe finally gets multiprocessing right in version 7… 😉

You can also sometimes get away with using Radial Blur if your fragments are exploding outwards from a cerntral point, or Directional Blur if your fragments are moving in one direction.

The Radeon should work fine for you. I have a Radeon 800XT running on a dual 2 gig G5 and it works great in AE; a big improvement over the card that shipped with the computer (some lesser ATI card.)

You can also do this without precomping if you wish; just duplicate your shatter layer and set the shatter settings on one layer to “render layer” and the other to “render pieces”. That way you can apply effects seperately to the pieces after they break off from the original layer.

There is some weird stuff going on with Corearsenal. I recently had to contact them to get a serial number and discovered that their site was down. Now it comes up as expired. I contacted Coreaudiovisual, who is sort of the parent of Corearsenal, as well as contacting Darf (creator of Jenna, etc.) directly. Darf and someone else replied, and I did get my serial #, but they said someone had been hacking their site so their service provider made them take it down. When I asked about it the guy from coreausiovisual said that “someone out there doesn’t like us.” The corearsenal tools are out of Darf’s control now, so he didn’t know anything about it. Not to be a gossip hound, but my gut feeling was that something weird was going on, and I wasn’t getting the full picture.

I hope they get things together, because they have first rate tools, and I had planned on getting more of them. Perhaps if they heard form more of the community that would motivate them to get corearsenal back out there? Just a thought…

    Ok, I have some info:

I got responses from both Darf and Dames from Coreaudiovisual. First off, Darf is not in direct control of corearsenal, but remains part of coreaudiovisual. He is only spending time developing applications when the produciton environment at coreaudiovisual demands it. He was able to get me my serial number, so all is well on my end for now.

Dames from Coreausiovisual told me that their site had been hacked so many times that their service provider made them take it down. He said he hoped to have a solution up within a week or so for everyone else.

In the meantime, I would suggest contacting Darf at darf@cidertank.com or Dames at dames@coreaudiovisual.com if you have any issues with their products.

I would also suggest that anyone who uses these fine tools let it be known to those guys that we’d love to see them continue to develop them. I get the impression there is more going on here than meets the eye, but these are terrific tools and it would be a shame if they went away or just weren’t supported any more.
