There ARE options for getting better quality out of an HDV camera. If you have a component out (RGB/YUV) or HDMI (but I think your Canon doesn’t have that), you can bypass the HDV codec and run into a computer/laptop and capture footage that way. Blackmagic makes numerous input devices that can capture compressed (H.254) or uncompressed video from component signals.

Yep use the volume envelope. Also, you can take it into Sound Forge and add your own fade NOT to 0 in there. In addition, if you right click on the fade you can select additional fade ins or outs that are not the default…

What are you looking to shoot? Going to a GH3 is different than another video camera, what makes you pick a DSLR vs a video camera? I looked at DSLRs and for my video needs went with a Canon HF G10 and then up to the G30 (pro versions offer XLR and HD-SDI which I don’t need). I ingest into Vegas smoothly and video looks incredible. I can get reasonable DOF with the G30 and it has quite a few bitrates and qualities in both AVCHD and MP4.
I am using an 8 core AMD and it works smoothly with the bitrates. Your i2600 should be fine.Just my two cents! Good luck!

Handbrake is awesome….use it all the time to convert to MP4’s. Much easier than compressor in my opinion…

I use Dish, and it usually shows up (HD channels) as 1080i. I have some channels that have both SD and HD versions, with the HD versions you can “zoom” in and have the SD fill the entire screen. This of course adds noise and pixelation. If I leave it at “normal” SD channels are in the center and letter and pillarboxed depending on if it is 4:3 or 16:9. My HD channels look very good and sports especially.
On a sort of side note, my BR player REALLY up-rezes DVDs to a nice quality. I can tell, but was pleasantly surprised given how much it has to work with on a DVD.
When I shoot in HD (1080i or 1080p) I almost always deliver in DVD format. I see the material in HD and DVD on the same TV, and it looks pretty good off the DVD for the most part (thanks to the BR player). I obviously can tell a major difference from watching the HD files from my WD Live player (I watch final edits for plays and such before I convert to DVD).But I digress, it is pretty amazing to see what hotels and such do with an SD signal. One also has to take into consideration that they don’t make CRT TV’s anymore, so a hotel and such upgrading may just be doing the TV’s and only had HD sets as an option..

Sometimes a gate can be a little helpful, but setting the threshold can be a bit tricky…try using that and a noise filter if you don’t have the Izotope mentioned above.
For future reference, if you are videotaping anything in a church try to pull a line from the board so you can reduce reverb. I know it can be hard, and not always possible, but it can save a ton of headache!
