I have a canon XH A1. I know, it’s getting old, but I love it and I’m capable to obtain beautiful picture now.
    My question is the following:
Is there any way to actually improve the HDV footage by rendering to another codec in Vegas 12? If no, well, I guess we stop here. If yes, which codec would you save your footage to?
    Cineform?
Would I improve the quality by saving to the following:

    Blu-Ray 1920 x 1080
Sony MXF (HD EX 1920 x1080)
    HD422
    XDCAM
    A Cineform codec?
I understand very well that the original being in HDV I’m not going to “create” better quality from nowhere, but maybe I’m missing something and some other format will give me something HDV doesn’t?
    Thanks
    Philippe

No, you cannot improve the quality of a footage by
    rendering to another codec.

So you keep it at HDV?
If you can’t improve the quality, can you at least not degrade it by uprezing to another codec?

So you keep it at HDV?
Well, yes you can. But dont overly concern yourself with degrading
issues, concentrate on making the content of your videos rich,
    appealing and interesting….etc.

There ARE options for getting better quality out of an HDV camera. If you have a component out (RGB/YUV) or HDMI (but I think your Canon doesn’t have that), you can bypass the HDV codec and run into a computer/laptop and capture footage that way. Blackmagic makes numerous input devices that can capture compressed (H.254) or uncompressed video from component signals.
If you have any interest in this, I can get you more info.

    Just my 2 cents….

In the link you sent it says: “My understanding is that the A1 does indeed give 4:2:2 colour space from the component out.”

    Frankly, I doubt that

Hey, just trying to help. I did the same thing with my Sony FX1’s and it was better. I cannot speak for the A1, as I don’t own one. I know my Canon G30’s and 10’s have better output on the HDMI side, but I am pleased with what I get in AVCHD as well.

    Good luck!
