  • Smooth GH3 Codec ?

I been working very happy using vegas 12 pro editing HDV footage.
My i7 2600 keeps up with it quite well. Very smooth.
I’m thinking of switching from my HDR FX-1 to a newer camera.
I’m looking at the GH3 mainly because image quality/price and codec options. I know nothing will be as low overhead as HDV, but because the GH3 has different bitrate options I had hoped it might have a codec choice with a little less CPU overhead.
Anybody out there editing GH3 footage on an i7 2600 using vegas without transcoding? If so what codec do you use. Most of my work is for internet and I don’t see a big need to go above 720P. I run my video off two Stata drives and print to a third.
    Thanks
    Brad

What are you looking to shoot? Going to a GH3 is different than another video camera, what makes you pick a DSLR vs a video camera? I looked at DSLRs and for my video needs went with a Canon HF G10 and then up to the G30 (pro versions offer XLR and HD-SDI which I don’t need). I ingest into Vegas smoothly and video looks incredible. I can get reasonable DOF with the G30 and it has quite a few bitrates and qualities in both AVCHD and MP4.
I am using an 8 core AMD and it works smoothly with the bitrates. Your i2600 should be fine.

Just my two cents! Good luck!

You can download some sample videos here, and try for yourself on your machine.

I downloaded and tried this. 2.9Ghz core i7.

Interesting that these files playback better than my GoPro Black files. My GP 1080p60 30Mbps files do not play smoothly. The GH3 1080p60 50Mbps file does play smoothly. Both are CABAC and supposedly Long GOP. The 72Mbps All-I format also plays smoothly for me, 1080p25. I am jealous.

    Hey thanks for the link!
Those files play very nice with Vegas even long dissolves the frame rate hold rock solid using best full preview ( @25p 72meg sec). The cpu usage is very low. Wow
    Thanks
