What price range are you looking at. There are so many cameras out it’s hard to give you some suggestions.

It might work just fine, but you might be asking for problems. I’d rather just use the audio from the Intensity card unless I wanted to only record audio, then I’d plug in Edirol. I say this because if anything was ever out of sync, I’d always have to wonder if it’s the hardware or the video clip.

I don’t use FCE, but I don’t think that is works with XML files. FCP 5 or 6 should open it, but getting it back to FCE really isn’t an option.
I don’t know what would be causing such an issue. You’ve already been quite complete in trying to figure out what to do.

You’re out of luck as far as I know. That’s why I often just capture using the capture now. Too many times I’ve lost a capture because of dropped frames or something digitizing with in and out points. It’s a pain when you have to start over.

At the same time?
You’ll have to wait to see what FCServer can do when it’s released, hopefully next week.
But even a SAN like XSAN doesn’t allow two users to use the same project at the same time. EditShare is probably the closest thing, but something tells me that you’re not ready to dump tens of thousands of dollars into a solution.
Easiest thing is to duplicate the media used to both computers and only work on separate sections in different project files. Then combine the sections back into one project file by copy and pasting or exporting XML files of the sequences or other bins. With just a little communication you can accomplish quite a bit.

My guess is that Final Cut Server will be released on the 13th.
As far as an upgrade to FCStudio, the biggest upgraded needed is DVDSP to support Blu-ray authoring. They’ve had a lot of time to work on getting it ready as DVDSP wasn’t really touched with the last upgrades.
Now Apple has been a big developing partner with RED and the only thing that they’ve done so far is helped with QT proxy files, which still don’t work in 16×9 and at full resolution 4k. With RED being so hot and Apple being one of the only two companies in the top tier developers group, I expect to see Apple release better RED support. Hopefully native R3D files in Color and one click conforming in FCP to conform from QT proxies to R3D files. Or something like that. I also think that a ProRes RGB 444 codec is a really important step for “desktop” 2k/4k finishing.
Color needs to continue to progress towards a professional competitor to other industry color grading standards. Just ask Joe Owens for more details on what exactly needs to happen, but NAB would be a great time to release 4K and native RED support.
Motion is great if they can just get the dang program to be stable. Livetype should die:) CinemaTools is fine. Sound Track Pro… I don’t have a clue what it needs as I only open it to look for a sound FX for editing. Compressor is okay, but could use some work on the new GUI.
This is more than you probably wanted to know, but I think that this boils down to a small update. Like the upgrade from FCP 4 to FCP 4.5 which was free. Or maybe FCP 5 to FCP 5.1 which was something like $50 or something. I also say this because many users haven’t upgraded to FCP 6 yet, so by making it more attractive, it will help tremendously.
If Apple makes these upgrades, they are major upgrades, but only for a small number of their users. I don’t know. But I really think that Apple is going to do something during NAB, even though they aren’t there. It might be a massive web campaign with lots of videos and info on their website.
Anyways, wait until the 14th if you can.

You definitely want a video capture card. The two main options are AJA and Blackmagic Design. Go to their websites and check them out. Price ranges from $350-$3500ish. Look for one with component in and out, analog audio in and out, maybe SDI depending on what you want in the future. There are a bunch of options.

I would compress the AJA reference movies to DVCPROHD in compressor. Make sure to keep the names the same. Then when you’re ready, just reconnect the files to the AJA reference movies.

Unfortunately, Compressor isn’t the right tool for this.
Fortunately, Cinema Tools, which also comes with FCS2, is the right tool.
You said that you shot the original footage at 30P. So open up the clip in Cinema Tools and select Conform, the select 23.98.
This will tell the quicktime file to play back at 23.98fps instead of 30P. It doesn’t change the frames at all visually, but simply changes how many frames per second it will play.
Make a copy of your clip and test it to see if you like the results.
WARNING: Your audio will be messed up. So if you want your audio to match, you’ll have to fix that in an audio program.

I gave it a shot starting up from a start-up disk that had FCP6 and sure enough it worked. But when I go back to FCP5.1 on that system, it doesn’t work any more:(
But now I know that it works and that’s great!
