  • Anyone guess when new Studio release?

Posted by Trevor Ward on April 6, 2008 at 12:24 am

Getting ready to upgrade from FCP 5 to FCP 6. Wondering if I should be waiting or just go for it. It seems like Apple makes a new release every year. Wasn’t it 1 year ago that they released FCP 6 at NAB? If so, does that mean they’ll be making a new release soon?

Sometime between now and January 1 2009. That’s my best guess.

NAB is one week away. Wait one more week. If Apple wants to tell us when Studio 3 will be released, there’s a good possibility you’ll know by Monday, April 14th.

    [Tom Wolsky] “Or April 2009.”

And of course the better question really is, “Anyone want to guess how many new features Apple will include in Studio 3 while not fixing many of the basic flaws that affect our day to day workflow?”

Seeing that Apple isn’t at NAB this year, I doubt they’ll announce anything.

They generally release new versions every two years.

My guess is that Final Cut Server will be released on the 13th.

As far as an upgrade to FCStudio, the biggest upgraded needed is DVDSP to support Blu-ray authoring. They’ve had a lot of time to work on getting it ready as DVDSP wasn’t really touched with the last upgrades.

Now Apple has been a big developing partner with RED and the only thing that they’ve done so far is helped with QT proxy files, which still don’t work in 16×9 and at full resolution 4k. With RED being so hot and Apple being one of the only two companies in the top tier developers group, I expect to see Apple release better RED support. Hopefully native R3D files in Color and one click conforming in FCP to conform from QT proxies to R3D files. Or something like that. I also think that a ProRes RGB 444 codec is a really important step for “desktop” 2k/4k finishing.

Color needs to continue to progress towards a professional competitor to other industry color grading standards. Just ask Joe Owens for more details on what exactly needs to happen, but NAB would be a great time to release 4K and native RED support.

Motion is great if they can just get the dang program to be stable. Livetype should die:) CinemaTools is fine. Sound Track Pro… I don’t have a clue what it needs as I only open it to look for a sound FX for editing. Compressor is okay, but could use some work on the new GUI.

This is more than you probably wanted to know, but I think that this boils down to a small update. Like the upgrade from FCP 4 to FCP 4.5 which was free. Or maybe FCP 5 to FCP 5.1 which was something like $50 or something. I also say this because many users haven’t upgraded to FCP 6 yet, so by making it more attractive, it will help tremendously.

If Apple makes these upgrades, they are major upgrades, but only for a small number of their users. I don’t know. But I really think that Apple is going to do something during NAB, even though they aren’t there. It might be a massive web campaign with lots of videos and info on their website.

Anyways, wait until the 14th if you can.

And by all means keep in mind that it was just a few weeks back that suddenly everyone had Apple selling off FCP and the Pro Apps.

Thanks Walter, you saved me the trouble of typing that exact response!

Hasn’t anyone else noticed this pattern? What good are new features if the old ones don’t work?

[Chris Tomberlin] “Hasn’t anyone else noticed this pattern?”

Certainly, but apparently no one from Apple.

[David Roth Weiss] “Certainly, but apparently no one from Apple.”

well, when you keep making your “inner circle” smaller and smaller, you listen to fewer and fewer voices. Hence we get more “features” but none of the little things fixed.

I wish we had full public betas and input like many other software companies do. Then you many voices and many “little” things can get addressed.

Of course, as people have noted on this forum over the years, FCP would require a complete re-build from the ground up in order to address many of the nagging issues many of us, most of them due to the media management employed by FCP.

That’s something to talk about there a total rebuild. At the announcement of Leopard last year they dropped support for 64bit Carbon. I’m thinking FCP is being ported over to Cocoa. Adobe announced that Photoshop will be 64bit for Windows in CS4 but will be awhile for the MAC since they will have to report everything over to Cocoa. This maybe where Final Cut Extreme comes in who knows. Shake is supposedly going to be reported and redone, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple makes a big announcement the day before or day of NAB even though they aren’t there.
