Will the FireStore be DVCPROHD?

If you’re editing in FCP6 and you have a good computer, I’d be tempted to still edit in ProRes. But DVCPROHD isn’t a bad option. It’s been used for several years with great success. ProRes is better though.

I’ve ordered one and I should get it on Tuesday. It looks very promising. Especially the 110% color gamut of NTSC. Plus it has a lot of different inputs that can be used.

Apple’s monitors are cool looking, but they are out of date and over priced.

Gigabit ethernet can work for a short term solution, but like you, it really isn’t suitable for a permanent solution (at least using Apple’s file sharing).

But I’ve done it when I’ve needed to add an iMac to a SAN. And it worked out okay for the project.

I was going to mention that. With the cost of drives, it would be much easier to just connect a RAID0 storage to each computer and then set it up at nights to clone the drives to the other so that all of the footage was on each RAID for each computer. Kind of messy, but… whatever.

You could try importing it into Motion. That might help put you in the right direction. Then export it at ProRes at an SD resolution at 50fps.

For slow motion, you can open it in CinemaTools and then conform it to 25 fps. It will mess up the audio, but is a really easy way to do what you’re looking at and doesn’t create or interpolate and information keeping image quality exactly at what you had.

I totally agree that the current FCP is getting closer and closer to the end of it’s product life. Major issues that I can think of is not being able to render RGB files at higher than 8-bits. It doesn’t support 4k resolutions, but that sounds more like a quicktime issue. And like Walter said, the general media management has been improved, but still suffers from many of the same problems year after year. And I don’t understand how the columns in the browser have never been addressed.

These issues might be able to be upgraded in future versions, but I think things are getting closer and closer to needing a fresh start.

I would suggest digitizing to either ProRes or DVCPROHD, then editing every sequence at HD. From there you should either downconvert in software or use a Kona 3 for output to beta.

Your question about how to deal with 16×9 in SD is really up to you and your client. You can either go anamorphic, cropped, or letterboxed. It’s up to you.

I totally agree with Mark. Setting this stuff up isn’t as easy as just installing software and connecting the computers.

I set up a four seat XSAN where I work and it took a lot of work and IT. Luckily I figured out a way to set it up where the continuing IT needs was minimal.

For your deployment you would need the following:
– Fibre switch
– XSAN for each computer
– Computer to act as a metadata controller with a fibre connection to switch

This is probably another $7000-$9000 to take it to set it up as a SAN. Plus there is the additional administration.

For me, setting up XSAN has had an amazing impact on my productivity on our projects. But it doesn’t make sense to everyone.

I would suggest you really look into the different options and start figuring out what you need.
