  • how to stop capture after hitting capture clip?

i was in a hurry to capture an entire 3 hour tape, so i made in/out points at the beginning and ends of the tape. Now i need to stop, its about halfway done, but if i hit escape it will kill my whole beginning part of the capture. Is there a way for me to just tell final cut to “STOP HERE” instead of me having to recapture the whole thing? I know how to do this in media 100, but not in FCP. is there another button i can press instead of escape to get this to work?

You’re out of luck as far as I know. That’s why I often just capture using the capture now. Too many times I’ve lost a capture because of dropped frames or something digitizing with in and out points. It’s a pain when you have to start over.

Why in the world would you capture a three hour tape as one clip? that’s a terrible way to work in FCP. Long clips like that are always the first to get corrupted and then you’ve lost your entire project and have to recapture.

At the very least, log it into 1/2 hour chunks and then capture. Or just do a Capture Now. We don’t use Capture Now all that much as we prefer to log everything.

Here’s a trick I tried a while back. I think it worked (not sure).

While the clip is capturing, go into your Capture Scratch folder and copy the Quicktime media file to another folder (copy, not move). So when you abort the capture, the copy you just made is still available for you to import into FCP.

I don’t remember if this works or not. The QT file may or may not be playable. Worth trying though.
