I just submitted the feedback to Apple to request a preference setting for whether the Trim Edit Window opens or not when using the Edit Selection Tool.
Let’s see what happens.

You’re right. It would be the timecode from the sequence, not the clips. I didn’t get which timecode you needed. Hopefully in the future, there will be better timecode support in FCP.

I’ve never figured out how the tool would make me a more efficient editor. I just don’t use it.
But wait….
I’ve just started playing with it and figured out how I might use it. Let’s say you have two clips making an edit on track 1 and another two clips making an edit on track 2 directly above the clips on track 1. Now we want to adjust the edit point between all of the clips at once.
So using the select edit tool, select the edit points and then adjust the edits using the [ or ] keys. It will move both edit points at the same time. That can be helpful.
Another advantage would be that it automatically opens the trim edit window, instead of having to double click on an edit to open the window.
Yet another useful way to use it could be to add a bunch of dissolves to stacked clips. Select the end edit point for all of the clips using the select edit tool, then close the trim edit window and select Apple+T. You just added transitions to every clip at the same time.
I’m guessing that there are more hidden powers of the tool, but I’ll leave others to add what they want.
I’m going to finally start using it now.

Jeremy brings up a great point! Often FCP says that there are timecode breaks when your drives aren’t keeping up. I’ve seen that before too.

With both a Kona 3 and a IO HD, you could also do the following:
1. Export a Reference Movie
2. Open the Reference Movie in AJA Kona TV
3. Change the Settings in the AJA control panel under Timecode to be “Use QT Timecode” and Timecode Burn-In “Timecode”.
4. Then play it out to from the Kona 3 to the IOHD. You might also want to down-convert it to SD using the Kona 3.If this works really depends on how long it takes to render out a ref movie of your footage.

Did you try creating a device control to be a Panasonic protocol instead of a Sony?
We have a DV50 deck that doesn’t function properly on edit to tape unless it is set to a Panasonic setting.

In general I’ve noticed that when I’m digitizing a tape and I’m getting “timecode breaks” when there really are no breaks on the tape, it’s because the device control isn’t set up properly to match the deck.
Just because you might be able to control the deck doesn’t mean that you have a good device control setup for the deck. Try playing around with different settings by creating new settings in the Audio/Video Settings menu.
As Gary said, more specifics would be very helpful.

It’s just strange that I haven’t heard of anyone else with that card having this problem. There’s probably a solution, but I just don’t know what to tell you.

This is a really good option unless it is a long event. But in that case, just do different clips for different hours to break it up.
I don’t have any footage to play with right now, but you should try the make multiclip sequence to speed things up.
