In many cases it’s like getting free applecare. In this case, it’s like getting free applecare and $150.
I will admit that I’d think twice about buying a refurb laptop. I’ve done it and had problems to the point where Apple replaced the laptop completely with a new one. That was both good and bad. I also know other people that have had more problems with refurb laptops. But for a desktop, I’m more comfortable with the idea.

Try selecting all of the clips, then right click and select make multiclip sequence. This should align all of the clips on a timeline with gaps between the timecode breaks.
Now try to add that sequence as a multiclip.
That might work.

If you’re only looking for a professional video output, you might also look at the Matrox MXO. It’s not anywhere as complete in features as the IO HD is, but if you only need output, then it’s a great option.

As far as how you shoot it, there are a couple of options:
1. Free run can be nice, but is a pain to digitize. Also depending on how you set it up, it won’t be frame accurate between each camera.
2. Use a slate for marking the sync point. If a camera stops recording, then you should resync it. If you use a timecode slate, this can be used to add an aux timecode to each clip. If you go this way, log the tape by clips before you digitize instead of just digitizing the whole tape.Also, don’t adjust the main timecode on the files. If you do, you lose your reference to the timecode on the tape.
It sound like you’re on the right track. I would strongly suggest running some tests with 2 cameras before the shoot just to make sure you know what you’re doing.

If you’re talking the 2.8Ghz Mac Pro, aren’t you’re talking about the 8-core, not the 4-core. In which case, it is the same unit that you can buy currently from Apple. It’s a great machine.
As far as hard drive space goes, your actually set up will depend on what type of footage you’re dealing with. I’d suggest as a minimum buying another hard drive and installing it for your media. I’ve never been a big fan of editing off of the system drive.

I’ve seen a bug in FCP that causes it to freak out on playback if you change the monitors when it’s open. So if you close FCP and reopen it, does it still freak out?

If there is no audio that you care about in the files, I would just use Cinema Tools and conform the files to 25P.
If you need to keep the audio, I’d suggest Nattress Standards Converter. I’ve never been very impressed with how Compressor does frame rate conversions.
