What’s the purpse of the Kona? What does it do? Is it compatible with my Macbook Pro laptop or is it something from MacPros only. However, if it is compatible, do I need to open it up and install it into the mother board? If you do, and something happens does that void your warranty with Apple?

    Thanks!

    Kyle,

I suggest you go to AJA.com and check it out and no, it won’t work with a laptop.

In a nutshell, the Kona card is a video capture device used to interface with professional VTRs and also allows you to real time monitor your timelines in HD and SD or both.

If you’re referring to the Kona IO/HD, that’s a box rather than a card and it plugs in via the firewire 800 port.

BTW, all of the Kona products are for inputting and outputting via VCRs and for displaying to SD and/or HD monitors as well.

How much would the lo HD box cost? Can’t seem to find it on the website. Also, I shoot in HDV, would the box even be worth investing in?

Three grand and it’s probably more than you need at this time. B&H.com is a place you can go to get prices for these kinds of things. You should get something so you can watch your video on a real monitor and AJA does make products that will accomplish this for less.

If you’re only looking for a professional video output, you might also look at the Matrox MXO. It’s not anywhere as complete in features as the IO HD is, but if you only need output, then it’s a great option.
