  • No…you can not play HDV footage in a DVCam deck. The new Sony HDV decks are pretty solid machines and are priced very reasonably, IMHO. They will play and record HDV, DVCam and DV tapes and are PAL/NTSC switchable. Another benefit is they will do real time HDV to DVCam or DV down conversion.

I haven’t had that issue with my system. Have you tried trashing the preferences or reinstalling Title 3D?

  • “Apple tells me that they generally replace “like for like” which I assume means that I am looking forward to a dual-core 2.0 (?).”

Don’t mean to be a downer but are you certain “like for like” doesn’t mean Apple will be shipping a refurbished model of your current machine? I’ve very rarely encountered a manufacturer that will replace a machine of an earlier vintage with brand new hardware even under an extended warranty plan. If they do, great for you. The cynic in me says to expect the same model as what you currently have.

I’ve owned both Panasonic and Sony decks over the years. The Sony transport mechanisms seem much more durable, especially in all the curent models. The Panasonic DV 2500 feels cheap in comparison to the Sony.

These look good…probably a bit out of our budget, but good info to have.

    Thanks.

Thanks, Walter. Medea was my first choice when I came across the SATA option. I thought it sounded intriguing. I know there will be a bit of a performance hit, but from what I could determine from the specs it looked like it whould do well with a DVC Pro HD, DV and Beta workflow…plus it’s a got a lower $$ per GB ratio. I don’t think I’d consider it for uncompressed HD. I’m hoping someone can chime in who has either used the Granite Digital SATA box or something similar and let us know if met expectations.

  • You’ll really be much better off using the Nattress Standards Conversion plug-in.

The difference in the results over FCP and Compressor’s built in conversions are well worth the $100. Get it at nattress.com

Have you tried rebooting your Io? Aja also released new drivers recently. I don’t know if they are Tiger specific or not, but you can download them from Aja’s website. If all else fails, Aja’s tech support is outstanding and will more than likely be able to help troubleshoot.

We purchased the JVC deck and had to send it back within a month for service. Turned out the tape transport had gone bad. It’s been fine ever since. The Panasonic 2500 and JVC 3000 are essentially the same decks, made on the same assembly line. I have a Sony DSR-45 that has been rock solid since the day it was installed. Hindsight being what it is, I wouldn’t purchase DV/DVCam decks from anyone other than Sony.

April 30, 2005 at 5:41 pm in reply to: FCP 4.5 to FCP 5 Upgrade question

Are you still a student/teacher/faculty or are you now in the “real world?” The Acedemic version is supposed to be used in educational environments and it’s technically against the license agreement to use it to make money. If you’ve moved on/graduated and are now a working professional, you’re technically supposed to pony up for a full license. In the long run, it’ll probably save you a lot of headaches if you buy a fully licensed version now so you don’t have to worry about future upgrade pricing/licensing confusions.

AFWIW, this isn’t intended to be a lecture, flame or anything other than basic information.
